A New Chapter for Kernersville
Kernersville, North Carolina, is making headlines once again as a major company chooses to establish its presence in the town. The decision by Modular Closets, a customizable closet company based in New Jersey, marks a significant milestone for the area. Mayor Dawn Morgan shared her excitement about the development, highlighting the company's choice to set up shop in Kernersville.
“We’re so excited that Modular Closets has chosen Kernersville for their North Carolina home,” said Mayor Morgan. The company will be relocating to a building located on the 700 block of North Main Street. This building was previously used as a Sara Lee manufacturing plant and has been vacant for an extended period. “It has not been used for manufacturing for a very long time, so we’re eager to welcome them,” added the mayor.
Residents like Mike Morgan, who have lived in the area since 1993, are also thrilled about the news. “When we moved into the area in 1993, it was the Sara Lee sock factory. It’s been a few other businesses since then, and I think it’s great,” Mike said.
The impact of this move is expected to be substantial. According to Greater Winston-Salem Incorporated, Modular Closets plans to invest $30 million into expanding to Kernersville. This investment is anticipated to create 100 jobs in its first year of operation, with 50 positions available within the first quarter. This not only brings economic growth but also provides employment opportunities for local residents.
Mayor Morgan noted that the company is currently working on obtaining the necessary permits to move into the building. “That area was already zoned for that type of use, so it didn’t need to be a rezoning hearing or any kind of rezoning case,” she explained. “It is simply a matter of working with our community development department and getting the right permit, and they have filed for their permits, so we are happy that they’ve made that commitment to be in Kernersville and make this investment in our community.”
The mayor expects the renovation of the building on North Main Street to begin early next year. This renovation will likely bring new life to the space and contribute to the revitalization of the area.
According to a press release, Modular Closets will offer local hybrid and remote work opportunities. This flexibility could attract a diverse range of talent and further enhance the company's ability to serve its customers effectively.
