Celebrating Local Talent at the MAMA Awards
Every year, the Modesto Area Music Association (MAMA) honors the vibrant music scene in Stanislaus County with its annual MAMA Awards. This year’s event was no different, as more than 3,600 voters from across the country and around the world cast their votes for their favorite local bands, cafes, venues, and events. The awards were presented during a special ceremony that brought together music lovers, artists, and community members to celebrate the region’s rich cultural heritage.
The voting process was open to people from over 20 states, ranging from California to the East Coast, as well as international participants from countries like Mexico, Germany, Wales, and France. This wide reach highlights the growing popularity of the MAMA Awards and the strong connection that fans have with the local music scene.
The awards ceremony took place at the State Theatre, where attendees enjoyed live performances by several local artists. The event was also broadcasted live online, allowing those who couldn’t attend in person to still be part of the celebration.

During the evening, lifetime achievement awards were presented to two iconic local institutions: KTRB Radio, which marked the beginning of commercial radio in Modesto, and the Swanee Cowboys, considered the city's first commercial band. These honors recognize the long-standing contributions these entities have made to the local music community.
The MAMA Awards were founded over two decades ago by Chris Murphy and current City Councilmember Chris Ricci. Initially, the organization was established as a way to promote and support live local music. Over the years, it has evolved into a nonprofit entity dedicated to celebrating and preserving the region’s musical legacy.
Murphy reflected on the journey of the MAMA Awards during the event. “Back in 2000, we celebrated at Club Maxx at the DoubleTree, and who would have thought that all these years later, we are still celebrating local music talent?” he said in a statement.
Murphy and MAMA director Middagh Goodwin co-hosted the evening, guiding guests through the night’s festivities and honoring the winners of this year’s awards.
