Latrell Mitchell Launches Music Initiative to Revive Flood-Damaged NSW Town

Latrell Mitchell Brings Country Music Festival to His Hometown

Latrell Mitchell, a prominent NRL champion, has taken his passion for country music and community engagement to the next level by organizing the Taree Country Festival. This event is not only a celebration of music but also a tribute to his cultural roots and a way to support his hometown.

Mitchell first gained attention when he made a guest appearance with country music star Luke Combs during a concert at Sydney's Qudos Bank Arena in August 2023. The moment was captured on video, showing him shotgun a beer alongside Combs in front of a large crowd. This experience sparked his interest in bringing country music to his home town of Taree.

The Taree Country Festival is set to take place on Saturday, November 8 at the Taree Showgrounds. For Mitchell, this event holds special significance as it is deeply connected to his heritage. He is of Biripi, Wiradjuri, Worimi, and Gumbaynggirr descent, and he remains closely tied to the land and its traditions. Growing up on the NSW mid-north coast, he often shares glimpses of his life on his farm and horseback rides online, highlighting his deep connection to Country.

The festival comes at a time when the local community is still recovering from devastating floods in May, which saw the Manning River reach unprecedented levels. Mitchell expressed his desire to give back to the community that has supported him throughout the years.

"I know this year hasn't gone to plan with floods and devastation - I've seen it first hand as I've been up at the farm, sussing out a few things there and what we've been able to salvage," Mitchell said. "I can only imagine what everyone else has gone through and what they're trying to rebuild now and get back on their feet."

The Taree Country Festival will be an all-ages event featuring live country music, bull riding, freestyle motocross, food trucks, line dancing, and family-friendly entertainment. Proceeds from the event will support the Winmarra Foundation’s initiatives aimed at empowering First Nations youth and rural communities.

Performers include Arabella Romi, Ben Burgess, Beau Shearer, Don Rogers Band, Georgia Darr, Jayden Kitchener-Waters, and Zak Armstrong. The festival aims to bring people together and restore a sense of community spirit in Taree.

Recent Controversies and Challenges

Despite his efforts to give back, Mitchell has faced several challenges in recent months. In August 2024, he was photographed in a Dubbo hotel room leaning over a table with a white substance, leading to an investigation by the NRL Integrity Unit. The NRL issued a breach notice, alleging that Mitchell brought the game into disrepute. As a result, he received a one-match suspension and a $20,000 fine.

South Sydney Rabbitohs imposed an additional $100,000 sanction, with $80,000 suspended, and required him to participate in a wellbeing program. Mitchell accepted responsibility for his actions, calling them "poor decisions" in a statement after meeting with club officials.

At the time, he was recovering from a foot injury, which complicated the timing of his one-game ban. The 25-year-old requested privacy from the media, asking reporters to stay away from his home while he dealt with the fallout.

Following the incident, NSW Police removed him from his ambassador role with Operation Pathfinder, a program aimed at reducing youth crime. Reports indicated the photo was taken while Mitchell was in Dubbo during a regional football clinic, and he later spent time at his farm near Taree.

The controversy followed a turbulent season that saw him miss several matches due to injury and suspension.
