Restaurants in Huntsville suffer during government shutdown

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The government shutdown that has lasted over three weeks has had a significant impact on federal workers and the local businesses that rely on their patronage. As of today, it's day 23 of the shutdown, which is now the second longest in U.S. history.

Claire Aiello, representing the Huntsville-Madison County Chamber of Commerce, explains that up to 20,000 federal workers from the Rocket City have been furloughed. While these workers are facing the most immediate challenges, local restaurants near Redstone Arsenal have also felt the effects of the shutdown.

Matthew Crane, who manages several establishments including Rocket City Tavern, Fiero Mexican Grill, and Rocket City Market, notes that these businesses previously relied heavily on federal workers coming in for lunch breaks. However, since the shutdown began, those employees have stopped visiting, leading to a noticeable decline in business.

“Guest counts have gone down quite a bit... foot traffic at all three locations,” Crane said. “We’ve even had catering orders canceled, some events canceled, so right now, we’re just trying to stay positive.”

Crane estimates that his businesses have lost 20-30% of their typical foot traffic since the shutdown started. He believes that many furloughed workers are now being more cautious with their spending, as they wait for their next paycheck.

“We know that they are tightening their belts right now,” Aiello said. “They are being careful with their spending.”

Crane emphasizes that the main focus of his restaurants is to provide the best possible experience for the guests who do come in, as the shutdown is beyond their control. Aiello adds that the uncertainty of when the shutdown will end makes it crucial for non-furloughed individuals to support local businesses.

“If you’re out there watching this and you can go out to eat 2 times a week, please do,” she said. “Our small business community needs you, and our servers would be happy to come in and see you at their restaurant and give great service.”

While the situation remains uncertain, Crane expresses his hopes and wishes for the furloughed workers who are currently without a paycheck.
