Anchorage Groups Seek Traditional Alaska Native Foods for Halong Victims

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – A collaborative effort is underway to support communities affected by flooding in Western Alaska. The Alaska Native Heritage Center has partnered with the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium to gather traditional Alaska Native foods for displaced villagers.

Kelsey Wallace, CEO of the Heritage Center, emphasized the importance of community involvement in this initiative. “We are asking our community to donate traditional Alaska Native foods, whether that’s to the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium or to the Alaska Native Heritage Center,” she said. “The foods that are donated will get directly into the hands — and the bellies — of our relatives here in Anchorage.”

Shea Siegert from the Health Consortium added that all traditional foods are welcome. “Moose, seal, all fish, all marine mammals. We are looking for those good traditional foods with a high preference for foods that are regional for the communities that have been displaced, so that people can get that comfort and healing and good feeling from those foods,” Siegert said.

The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) plans to provide meals to individuals currently staying in shelters, while the Heritage Center will focus on those who have been displaced but are not in shelters.
