4 Family Members of Illinois Governor Candidate Killed in Montana Helicopter Crash, Campaign Confirms

Tragedy Strikes as Four Family Members of Illinois Governor Candidate Die in Helicopter Crash

A devastating incident has shaken the political landscape of Illinois after four family members of a Republican candidate for governor were killed in a helicopter crash in Montana. The news, reported by the campaign team, has left many in shock and mourning.

The victims include the son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren of Darren Bailey, a former state lawmaker who previously ran for governor in Illinois. Bailey, who lost the 2022 gubernatorial election, is now seeking his party’s nomination again for the 2026 race. His son, Zachary, along with his wife Kelsey, and their two children, Vada Rose and Samuel, were among those who perished in the crash.

Zachary was piloting the helicopter when it went down in a remote area of eastern Montana. According to Aaron Del Mar, who serves as a family spokesperson and is also Bailey’s running mate, the family was on a business trip to expand their use of helicopters for the family's farm business. The couple’s third child was not present during the flight.

“Darren and Cindy are heartbroken by this unimaginable loss. They are finding comfort in their faith, their family, and the prayers of so many who love and care for them,” the statement from the campaign said.

Zachary had obtained his helicopter license years ago with the intention of delivering medical supplies and aid to people in third-world countries. This passion for helping others was a driving force behind his decision to pursue aviation.

The cause of the crash remains unknown, and no other individuals were on board the helicopter. The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the incident, which occurred near the town of Ekalaka. The sheriff’s office in Carter County responded to the crash site, located southwest of the town in the hilly Chalk Butte area.

Bailey, who resides in Xenia, Illinois, announced in September that he is seeking the GOP’s nomination for governor in 2026. He faced off against Gov. JB Pritzker in the 2022 election, where he was ultimately defeated.

Pritzker expressed his condolences to the Bailey family, stating, “I cannot imagine losing a child, losing two grandchildren, and what they must be going through.”

Bailey, known for his staunch conservative views, gained significant attention in 2020 as a vocal critic of Pritzker’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. He often refused to wear a mask during legislative sessions, drawing both support and criticism.

During his previous run for governor, Bailey focused on issues such as crime in Chicago and proposed eliminating the state’s gun licensing system, arguing that it does not prevent illegal gun use. He once supported a resolution to make Chicago a separate state.

Bailey also ran against U.S. Rep. Mike Bost in last year’s primary race, though he was unsuccessful in challenging the five-term incumbent.

Illinois GOP Chair Kathy Salvi released a statement expressing the party’s grief over the tragic loss. “Please join us in keeping the Bailey family in our thoughts and prayers during this unimaginable time,” the statement read.

This tragedy has left a profound impact on the community and the political arena, highlighting the personal sacrifices made by those in public service. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting the Bailey family during this difficult time.
