New Congressional Map Sparks Concerns in North Carolina
GOLDSBORO, N.C. – A new congressional voting map has been approved by North Carolina Republican lawmakers, which could potentially make it more challenging for First District Representative Don Davis to retain his seat. This development has sparked significant concern among residents and local leaders.
Davis, who is currently serving his second term, has expressed strong opposition to the newly passed map. He highlighted that since the start of the year, his office has received over 46,616 messages from constituents, all of which were against the new map. “But overwhelming opposition to new maps, all those voices ignored,” he stated during an interview with WITN.
The representative emphasized that the timing of the map's approval is particularly concerning, as farmers, families, and Eastern North Carolinians are struggling to cope with various challenges. “This is home for me and this is personal,” Davis said. “All these families, far and near across the east. They want someone to speak towards their issues.”
He pointed out that the concerns raised by his constituents are real and pressing. “I’m hearing about legitimate real concerns of healthcare; people right now are uncertain about their premiums doubling. Not about a new map just for Eastern North Carolina,” he added.
Davis mentioned that this is the third time the map has been redrawn during his tenure. He is advocating for a national ban on mid-decade redistricting. “I believe that we should have a national ban on mid-decade redistricting,” he said. “My whole thing is we need to end this. I would even say to the president, I would rather work with you than to erode the trust of the people of Eastern North Carolina and people across this country.”
His main priorities include ensuring that constituents have a voice and that families are not overlooked during government shutdowns. “I think it was a dark day for our state and it will go down in history as one of our darkest moments, but this is a new day and I want everyone to know that I have your back,” he said.
Davis also noted that he is committed to continuing to represent Eastern North Carolina and sending a clear message that he stands with the people. “We’re going to continue to make sure that we’re speaking up for Eastern North Carolina, we’re sending a loud message that we are standing with the people so their voices can be heard and to be clear, Democrats, Republicans, unaffiliated, so many have reached out sharing their concerns.”
Following the passage of the congressional maps in Raleigh, Republican Congressman Greg Murphy announced his intention to run for another term in the House of Representatives. This move signals a potential shift in the political landscape of the region.
