Netflix has made a groundbreaking decision for its original series, "Stranger Things." The two-hour final episode of the show will have a theatrical release on December 31, 2025, and January 1, 2026. Notably, this is the same day the episode will be available on streaming platforms.
On Thursday, Netflix revealed that the conclusion of the long-running series will be shown in 350 theaters across the United States and Canada. This move marks a unique opportunity for fans to experience the finale on the big screen.

The creators of "Stranger Things," the Duffer Brothers, expressed their excitement about the theatrical release. They shared a statement with The Hollywood Reporter, saying, “We’re beyond excited that fans will have the chance to experience the final episode of 'Stranger Things' in theaters — it’s something we’ve dreamed about for years, and we’re so grateful to [Netflix executives Ted Sarandos and Bela Bajaria] and everyone at Netflix for making it happen.”
They added, “Getting to see it on the big screen, with incredible sound, picture and a room full of fans, feels like the perfect — dare we say bitchin’ — way to celebrate the end of this adventure.”
‘Stranger Things’ finale was planned to skip the silver screen
This recent announcement represents a significant shift from a previous statement by a company executive earlier this month. At that time, it was indicated that the finale would not be released in theaters.
Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s chief content officer, had told Variety, “A lot of people — a lot, a lot, a lot of people — have watched 'Stranger Things' on Netflix. It has not suffered from lack of conversation or community or sharing or fandom. I think releasing it on Netflix is giving the fans what they want.”
The final season of "Stranger Things" will be released in three parts:
- The first four episodes on November 26
- Three episodes on December 24
- The two-hour finale on New Year’s Eve

This strategic release plan allows fans to engage with the series in multiple formats, catering to both those who prefer the convenience of streaming and those who want the immersive experience of a theater. The decision to offer a theatrical release for the finale highlights the growing influence of streaming services in the entertainment industry and their willingness to adapt to fan preferences.
As the final season approaches, anticipation continues to build among fans of the show. With the combination of a cinematic experience and the accessibility of streaming, "Stranger Things" is set to deliver a memorable conclusion to its five-season run.
