Governor Hochul Supports Sharon Owens in Syracuse Mayoral Race
As the election day approaches, New York Governor Kathy Hochul made a stop in Syracuse to support Democratic mayoral candidate Sharon Owens. This visit was part of a broader campaign tour across the state, highlighting key issues and candidates who align with her vision for New York.
Hochul, who graduated from Syracuse University in 1980, expressed her pride in returning to the city as governor. She addressed a large crowd at the 1199 SEIU union hall, emphasizing the significance of the moment. “I’m proud to be able to return here today as governor and to witness history in the making,” she said, reflecting on the importance of the event.
This visit was not just a local event but part of a statewide strategy ahead of the upcoming election. Hochul had already made stops in Buffalo and Rochester earlier that day, with more events planned for Sunday in Albany, Westchester, and New York City.

Several other local Democratic leaders also participated in the event, showing their support for Owens. State Sen. Rachel May, Onondaga County Democratic Committee Chair Max Ruckdeschel, and Kevin Lockhart, Central New York area vice president for 1199 SEIU, all shared their endorsements.
May praised Owens’ campaign, calling it one of the best she’s ever seen. “You’ve shown people why you’re the best choice for mayor,” May said. “You’ve shown grace, grit and compassion for every single person in this city.”
Owens encouraged her supporters to remain energized as they head into Tuesday’s election. “My campaign has been about not trashing other people but speaking about my vision,” she said. “I’m here for the people of Syracuse. I’m so excited about what’s in our future.”
