A Critique of Political Gridlock and Partisan Division
Former President Barack Obama took to the stage during a campaign event in Norfolk, Virginia, where he criticized the ongoing federal government shutdown. The 64-year-old leader expressed frustration with the Republican Party, which currently holds control of Congress. "They're not even pretending to solve the problem," he said to a rally crowd while supporting former Rep. Abigail Spanberger, who is now running for governor of Virginia. "They have not even been showing up to work, not in session. Where are you? What are you doing?"
The government shutdown began on October 1, after lawmakers failed to pass a spending bill to fund the government. Democrats were particularly concerned that expiring Affordable Care Act tax cuts could lead to higher premiums, while Medicaid cuts might leave people without health coverage. Meanwhile, Republicans have blamed Democrats for the shutdown, with former President Donald Trump recently calling them "crazed lunatics."
A Clash of Perspectives
Trump has repeatedly criticized the Democratic Party, claiming they are responsible for the shutdown. "The shutdown proceeds because the Democrats just don't know what they're doing," he told reporters this week. He added, "I don't know what's wrong with them. They've never done a thing like this. They've become crazed lunatics." Trump also suggested getting rid of the filibuster, stating that Democrats would take advantage of the opportunity to pack the Supreme Court and gain more electoral votes.
He wrote on Truth Social, "Remember, Republicans, regardless of the Schumer Shutdown, the Democrats will terminate the Filibuster the first chance they get. They will Pack the Supreme Court, pick up two States, and add at least 8 Electoral Votes. Their two objectors are gone!!! Don’t be WEAK AND STUPID. FIGHT,FIGHT, FIGHT! WIN, WIN, WIN! We will immediately END the Extortionist Shutdown, get ALL of our agenda passed, and make life so good for Americans that these DERANGED DEMOCRAT politicians will never again have the chance to DESTROY AMERICA!"
A Dark Political Climate
Obama did not address the role of Democrats in the shutdown during his remarks but was critical of Trump and his administration. "Our country and our politics are in a pretty dark place right now," he said. "It's hard to know where to start, because every day this white House offers up a fresh batch of lawlessness and recklessness and mean-spiritedness and just plain craziness."
He joked about the situation, saying, "It's like every day is Halloween. Except it's all tricks and no treats. And here's the thing, it's not as if we didn't see some of this coming. I will admit, it's worse than even I expected. But I did warn y'all."
Economic Disparities and Policy Failures
Obama pointed out that while the economy has been beneficial for Trump's "billionaire pals," average Americans have not seen improvements. He stated, "There is absolutely no evidence Republican policies have made life better for you." He also criticized Republicans for focusing on scapegoating minorities and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives for every problem.
"What they have not devoted energy to is helping you," he said. "They have not put forward serious proposals to lower housing costs or make groceries more affordable."
Supporting Democratic Candidates
Obama encouraged the crowd to support Spanberger, who is facing off against Virginia’s Lieutenant Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears in an open seat for governor. Later that Saturday, he traveled to New Jersey for a rally with Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rep. Mikie Sherrill, who is in a tight race against Republican Jack Ciattarelli.
