Rush Announces 2026 Tour with New Drummer
Rush, the iconic rock band known for its groundbreaking music and unique sound, is set to embark on its first tour in over a decade in 2026. This major event will mark a new chapter for the band as they introduce a new drummer to their lineup. The announcement came from the band's leaders, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, who shared the news in October 2025. The upcoming tour, titled the Fifty Something Tour, will celebrate "RUSH's music, legacy and the life of late drummer and lyricist Neil Peart," according to a statement released on the band's website.
The statement also revealed that Anika Nilles, an emerging talent in the drumming world, will join the band. Lee expressed his excitement about the addition, stating, "Yet life is full of surprises, and we have been introduced to another remarkable person; an incredible drummer and musician who is adding another chapter to our story while continuing her own fascinating musical journey." He emphasized that fans can expect to see Nilles shine in her role, despite the challenge of filling the shoes of a legend like Peart.
Anika Nilles: A Rising Star in the Music World
Anika Nilles has made a name for herself through her dedication and passion for music. Before pursuing a career in drumming, she worked as a preschool teacher and studied social work for five years. In a 2019 interview with Drum Radar, Nilles reflected on her decision to leave her education job to focus on music. She attended the Pop Academy in Germany, where her studies extended beyond just drumming. The curriculum included topics such as self-promotion, managing finances, and using social media—skills that have proven invaluable in her career.
Nilles began her journey as a performer by touring Europe and the United States. Starting in 2015, she conducted drum education tours, including a notable event at the DrumShop in Washington, England. The shop praised her performance, stating, "Anika Nilles was fantastic!" Her 2018 U.S. tour included stops in Chicago and Salt Lake City, Utah, further solidifying her presence in the music scene.
Beyond Drumming: A Multifaceted Artist
In addition to her drumming skills, Nilles is also a composer. In the same interview with Drum Radar, she discussed her approach to songwriting. "More or less when I start composing it's similar to when a band is composing a song together," she said. "I start with an instrument, then I do the next one, I put it down for a few days while listening to it, and then I restart the process. I get new ideas and let the song grow."
Her talents have not gone unnoticed. In 2022, Nilles toured with legendary guitarist Jeff Beck, which caught the attention of Geddy Lee. During a 2023 interview with the Guardian, Lee mentioned Nilles, highlighting her impressive skills. "I heard this drummer the other day, I think her name is Anika [Nilles]. She played on the last Jeff Beck tour and I thought she was terrific."
The Role of YouTube in Her Career
YouTube has played a significant role in Nilles' career, allowing her to share her music with a wider audience. In a 2015 interview with Drum! Magazine, she spoke about how the platform has helped her connect with fans. "The biggest goal is to share my music and playing with the people," she explained. "All of my new songs will continue to be released on my YouTube channel in the future. But there will be different categories coming up on the channel this year, including a Live Drums playlist. Also there will be some special videos coming up."
As Rush prepares for their 2026 tour, the addition of Anika Nilles brings a fresh energy to the band. Fans are eager to see how she will contribute to the group's legacy while making her own mark in the world of rock music.
