Emerald Fennell’s New Adaptation of Wuthering Heights Set for 2026

Emerald Fennell, the writer and director behind the critically acclaimed film Saltburn (2023), has returned to the world of classic literature with her latest project: an adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. Known for her work on Promising Young Woman (2020), which earned her an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, Fennell is once again showcasing her talent in reimagining a beloved story. This new version of Wuthering Heights will be released in theaters on February 13, 2026, coinciding with Valentine’s Day weekend.

The Cast of Wuthering Heights

Fennell has assembled a star-studded cast for her take on the classic novel. Jacob Elordi, who previously starred in Saltburn, will play the enigmatic and complex character of Heathcliff. Margot Robbie, known for her roles in films like Bombshell and I, Tonya, will portray Catherine Earnshaw, the central female figure in the story.

In addition to these leads, Hong Chau, Alison Oliver, and Shazad Latif have also joined the project. Hong Chau, best known for her role in The Instigators, will narrate as Nelly Dean, the long-time servant who plays a key role in the story. Alison Oliver, who appeared in Saltburn, will play Isabella Linton, while Shazad Latif will portray Edgar Linton, the aristocratic husband of Catherine.

Behind the Scenes of the Film

Fennell is not only directing and writing the film but also producing it. Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, is involved in the production, and MRC has provided financing and served as the studio for the project. Warner Bros Motion Pictures Group has secured the rights for theatrical distribution.

Controversy Over Casting Choices

One of the most notable aspects of this adaptation has been the casting of Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff. The character’s ethnicity in Brontë’s original 1847 novel is intentionally left ambiguous, though certain descriptions suggest that Heathcliff may not have been white. Additionally, fans have pointed out that Catherine is described as having brown hair in the novel, which has led to some debate about the casting choices.

A Classic Story Reimagined

Set against the backdrop of the Yorkshire moors, Wuthering Heights follows the tumultuous relationship between two families: the Earnshaws and the Lintons. The story is framed through the perspective of Mr. Lockwood, a tenant at Thrushcross Grange, who learns about the history of Wuthering Heights from Nelly Dean. At its core, the novel explores the intense and destructive love between Heathcliff, an orphan adopted by Mr. Earnshaw, and Catherine, his adoptive sister.

Previous Adaptations of Wuthering Heights

There have been several adaptations of Wuthering Heights over the years. In 2011, Andrea Arnold directed a version starring Kaya Scodelario and James Howson. A 1992 adaptation featured Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche, while William Wyler’s 1939 film starred Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier. More recently, a 2009 TV mini series starred Tom Hardy and Charlotte Riley.

A Teaser Trailer Released

A teaser trailer for Fennell’s Wuthering Heights was released in early September, offering audiences a first look at the film. The clip features the song “Everything is romantic (feat. Caroline Polachek)” by Charli xcx, setting the tone for what promises to be a visually striking and emotionally charged adaptation.

What to Expect From the Film

With Fennell at the helm and a stellar cast, Wuthering Heights is expected to bring a fresh perspective to one of the most iconic works of English literature. As the release date approaches, fans and critics alike are eager to see how this new interpretation will shape the story and its characters.
