The Evolution of the Sorcerer Supreme Title

In the Marvel Universe, the title of "Sorcerer Supreme" has been held by various powerful individuals. Doctor Stephen Strange is most famously associated with this role, having inherited it from his mentor, the Ancient One. However, the title has also belonged to others, such as Jericho Drumm, known as Brother Voodoo. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the title was not originally given to Strange but rather to his colleague, Wong.

The 2024 crossover event "Blood Hunt" introduced a new twist when the masked villain Doctor Victor von Doom seized the title of Sorcerer Supreme. Unlike his rival, Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four, Doom is a master of both the mystic arts and practical sciences. This year's major Marvel comic crossover, "One World Under Doom," showcases Doom using his newfound power to conquer and rule.

A New Era for the Sorcerer Supreme

The upcoming issue "One World Under Doom" #9, set for release on November 19, 2025, is expected to show Doom being deposed, with someone rising to take his place. Marvel has revealed that this new Sorcerer Supreme will be Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch.

Wanda’s powers have evolved significantly over time. Initially depicted as a mutant in Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's early "X-Men" comics, she could manipulate probability to cause bad outcomes. Over time, her abilities expanded to include chaos magic and even reality-warping. In the MCU, her powers have similarly grown, starting with nightmarish visions and red energy blasts, escalating to reality-warping in "WandaVision" and the use of the Darkhold in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness."

Once considered the weak link of "Cap's Kooky Quartet" in the 1960s, the Scarlet Witch is now universally recognized as one of the strongest Avengers, even making Thanos fear her.

Wanda's New Chapter as Sorcerer Supreme

The next chapter of Wanda’s story is set to begin as the new Sorcerer Supreme. While the exact method by which she acquires the title remains unclear, she will star in a new ongoing series titled "Sorcerer Supreme." The series will be written by Steve Orlando and drawn by Bernard Chang.

Orlando has been writing about Wanda since 2023, starting with an ongoing "Scarlet Witch" series. This series ran for 10 issues before evolving into a four-issue mini-series, "Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver," featuring Wanda’s brother Pietro. In 2024, the "Scarlet Witch" series reset back to issue #1, running for 10 more issues, followed by five issues of "The Vision and Scarlet Witch." The new "Sorcerer Supreme" series can be seen as "season 3" of Orlando’s "Scarlet Witch" storyline, but with a relaunch at issue #1, suggesting it is designed as a jumping-off point.

Challenges Ahead for Wanda

The opening arc of "Sorcerer Supreme" will focus on Wanda’s contest of legitimacy. The Sorcerer Supreme title is bestowed by the Vishanti, a group of higher beings. However, the Vishanti refuse to acknowledge Wanda as their champion, instead naming her magic teacher, Agatha Harkness, as the Sorcerer Supreme. Agatha, who played a villainous role in "WandaVision" and starred in the witchy spin-off "Agatha All Along," presents a significant challenge for Wanda.

In addition to Agatha, Wanda will also face the Goblin Queen, Madelyne Pryor. A clone of the X-Men's Jean Grey, Madelyne shares her source self's powers and skills in dark magic. Wanda, who first appeared as a member of Magneto's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, was once a counterpart to Jean. Despite her growth into the Sorcerer Supreme, she will now face a foe with the face of her original rival.
