Thousands of people gathered in the heart of downtown for the South Carolina Pecan Music and Food Festival, a vibrant event that brought together locals and visitors alike. The festival offered something for everyone, with a mix of live music, classic car displays, rides, games, and an array of food vendors. At the center of it all was the beloved pecan, which played a starring role in both the festival’s name and its offerings.
Florence is home to what many consider the world’s largest pecan festival, drawing tens of thousands of attendees each year. This annual gathering has become a highlight of the fall season, known for its lively atmosphere and community spirit. According to Southern Living Magazine, the event has grown into a must-visit destination for those looking for a taste of southern culture.
The festival was first launched in 2004, inspired by the vision of Jean Downey and the late Pat Gibson Hye-Moore, a former city council member. Since then, it has evolved into a major attraction, earning recognition as the “best community festival” in the Pee Dee region and one of the “best fall festivals in South Carolina” by Travel and Leisure online.
To accommodate the growing number of attendees, the city closed off ten blocks of downtown, creating a bustling space for more than 280 vendors. These vendors offered everything from traditional southern dishes to unique treats, ensuring there was something for every palate. Alongside the food, the festival featured live music, interactive games, and a variety of activities that kept visitors entertained throughout the day.
For many, the festival is more than just about pecans—it’s about enjoying good food, meeting friends, and experiencing the charm of a small town celebration. Connie Street, a visitor from Rock Hill, described the event as a delightful experience. “Oh my god, it is so wonderful to see all the vendors, the music, the cars, is something I'll definitely come to every year,” she said.
Street also highlighted the appeal of the car show, which is one of the festival’s most popular attractions. This year, over 150 classic cars were on display, drawing car enthusiasts from across the region. For families, the festival offers a chance to bond over shared experiences, whether it's enjoying a meal, admiring vintage vehicles, or simply soaking in the festive atmosphere.
After 21 years, the Pecan Music and Food Festival continues to bring people together, celebrating the values of food, family, and fun. Douglas Backus, a festival attendee, encouraged others to visit. “Come to the pecan festival, Florence got it going on,” he said.
With big crowds, great music, and plenty of southern flavor, this year’s event is expected to draw over 50,000 people. The Thomas McClary Commodores Experience served as the headline act, adding to the excitement of the day.
Organized and produced by the Florence Downtown Development Corporation, the festival remains a testament to the power of community and tradition. It’s a celebration that not only honors the local heritage but also brings people together for a day of joy, laughter, and delicious food.
