A DoorDash driver who attempted to assist a family in distress found himself in a life-threatening situation after being stabbed in the neck. On a weekend afternoon, 60-year-old Melvin Swagerty was driving along Highway 101 in Port Angeles when he noticed a family consisting of two adults and seven children walking on the roadside. As the vehicle moved east on Highway 101, something went terribly wrong. Around 8:10 p.m., law enforcement received a report of an assault on Carlsborg Road in Sequim. Deputies arrived at the scene and found Swagerty injured, having been stabbed in the neck. He was unable to speak and was quickly airlifted to Harborview Medical Center for treatment.

Inside the vehicle, deputies found a significant amount of blood near the driver’s seat and recovered a bloody knife from Well’s pocket. The discovery raised serious concerns about the welfare of the children and the potential danger posed by the adults.
In court, Rosario Lopez Castro appeared visibly distressed as the judge issued no-contact orders for all seven of her children. Bail was set at $100,000 for Lopez and $500,000 for Well, who may also face charges of attempted murder in Clallam County.
As of October 23, Swagerty was released from Harborview Medical Center. However, the road to recovery is uncertain. Brown expressed concern for her father’s well-being, noting that he has suffered greatly from the attack and hopes for support from the community.
