A Reflection on a Distinguished Acting Career

Kate Hudson, the acclaimed actress known for her role in “Almost Famous,” has taken a moment to reflect on her extensive career in Hollywood. At 46 years old, she has spent nearly three decades in the entertainment industry and recently shared insights during the premiere of her upcoming film, “Song Sung Blue,” at AFI Fest in Los Angeles on October 26.

Hudson expressed her gratitude for the connections she has made throughout her career. “The first thing that comes to mind is the people I’ve met and the relationships I’ve formed. They always feel like my biggest gifts,” she told a publication during the event. She emphasized how lucky she feels to be part of a world filled with fascinating and intelligent individuals who often live outside the norm.

As the daughter of Hollywood icon Goldie Hawn and musician Bill Hudson, Hudson’s journey into acting began with a debut in the 1998 indie film “Desert Blue.” However, it wasn’t until two years later that she gained widespread recognition for her role as Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe’s 2000 musical drama “Almost Famous.” Her performance earned her a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and an Oscar nomination, marking a significant milestone in her career.

Hudson’s latest project, “Song Sung Blue,” features her alongside Hugh Jackman as a married couple performing in a Neil Diamond tribute band called Lightning & Thunder. The film is based on a 2008 documentary of the same name. “All I ever wanted to do was do musicals,” Hudson said about her upcoming movie. “This isn’t a traditional musical, but this movie in particular is everything I’ve studied throughout my career.”

She also praised the film’s writer and director, Craig Brewer, expressing her happiness that he wanted her to be part of the project. Hudson described the process of getting into character for her role as Claire Sardina, opposite Jackman’s Mike Sardina, as being influenced by her hairstyle. “It was the hair,” she explained. “The second my hot rollers went in and came out, I just felt like a completely different person.”

Hudson also shared her admiration for the character of Claire Sardina and her outlook on life. “There’s something about Claire; she has this love for life,” she said. “Even in the darkest moments, when you get to know her, she powers through with this light and joy, and wants to make everything happy.” She added that there was something about that energy that resonated with her.

Additionally, Hudson had the opportunity to meet the real Neil Diamond while filming “Song Sung Blue.” This experience gave her a new perspective on the legendary musician and his music. “Getting to know him was a real dream,” she said. “He’s so wonderful, kind, and loving, and his family is great.”

Hudson also highlighted the impact of Neil Diamond’s music. “But Neil has this thing—he brings people together. It’s this kind of music,” she continued. “It’s so American, and at the same time, it just makes people happy.” She concluded by reflecting on the emotional connection that Neil Diamond’s songs create. “There’s something about the songs he writes that makes people want to put their arms around each other and sing it.”
