At the Whitney Library in the southeast valley, Billy Allen, the branch manager, has created a program that combines music, movement, and storytelling to captivate families. His weekly event, called “Hip-Hop Story Time,” takes place every Thursday and has become a popular attraction for parents and children alike.
Allen, who is affectionately known as “Mr. Billy,” brings his own style to the library’s story time sessions. He plays hip-hop music on his computer while rapping along to the beat and reading from picture books. “I’ll read this book 20 different times and you’re going to get 20 different experiences,” Allen said. He explained that his method is influenced by his love for hip-hop, comedy, and battle rap. “I used to work in another library system, and I’m like, okay, I don’t do my story times like other people. I like hip hop. I like being myself.”
The program not only entertains but also encourages children to develop a love for reading. One such child is 2-year-old Aaron, whose mother, Daisy Reyes, shared how the sessions sparked his interest in books. “That’s how he started liking books. He didn’t like books at all,” she said.
Allen believes that involving parents is a key part of his strategy. By showing adults how fun reading can be, he hopes to create a positive association with books. “So if the kids are looking at them, I’m like, ‘Okay, mom bopping to the story,’ that creates the thirst of reading,” he said.
His ultimate goal is to help families bring the spirit of “Hip-Hop Story Time” into their homes. “My big picture is, can we get adults to look and mimic this? To be like, you can have fun reading. It’s not a chore,” Allen explained.
By fostering a love for reading early on, Allen hopes to improve literacy levels across the valley. He believes that if children can associate reading with fun and creativity, they are more likely to continue developing this habit through middle and high school.
