New school year brings new goals for Jackson County School District

JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Students in Jackson County are excited to be returning to class.

“It’s just cool and exciting having my friends in the same class as me because I won’t get bored,” said Jameson Johnson, a fifth grader at Marianna K-8. “We all sit by each other — for now.”

“My favorite part is the energy, the excitement; students come in showing you their brand-new backpacks,” said Edna Reed, the principal of Marianna K-8. “Showing you things like their light-up shoes, their light-up backpacks, their new supplies.”

At Marianna K-8, educators are setting high goals for the year ahead.

“I would like to see everyone rise to a whole new level, to work at their very best and highest capabilities,” Reed said.

Jackson County School District’s superintendent is also setting goals.

“Jackson County School District is at the highest grade it has ever been,” said Hunter Nolen, the Jackson County School District Superintendent. “We’re a high-level B, and we’re looking to climb that ladder and get into the A status very, very soon.”

The district has also improved its graduation rate.

“We’re very happy that we have definitely improved our graduation rate to right at 90 percent; we’re looking at 95 percent for this year,” Nolen said.

The district has plans to achieve those goals.

“We’re focusing this year a lot on our math, our mathematics scores,” said Nolen. “We’ve worked hard all summer; we have two math consultants that are working for us full time.”

Jackson County School District says they still have a few open positions for the school year and are always hiring school bus drivers.
