Although Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix shares showed an upward trend following NVIDIA’s earnings announcement, the gains extended for five trading days in only half of the cases.
Immediately after the market opened on the 27th, Samsung Electronics was trading at 269,500 won, up 1.75% from the previous trading day, while SK Hynix was trading at 1.767 million won, up 4.68%.
Earlier, NVIDIA announced on the 26th, local time, that its revenue for the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year reached 96.221 billion dollars, a 106% increase compared to the same period last year. Operating profit surged by 124% to 63.734 billion dollars. Compared to the previous quarter, revenue increased by 18% and operating profit by 19%. NVIDIA’s quarterly revenue has set a record high for 13 consecutive quarters.
Looking at the trend so far, in four out of the five recent NVIDIA earnings announcements up to this day, both stocks rose together.
Following NVIDIA’s earnings announcement on August 28 last year, Samsung Electronics fell by 1.42%, while SK Hynix rose by 3.27%. After the announcement on November 20 last year, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix rose by 4.25% and 1.60%, respectively. On February 26 this year, they rose by 7.13% and 7.96%, respectively, and on May 21, they surged by 8.51% and 11.17%, respectively.
SK Hynix, which supplies high-bandwidth memory (HBM) to NVIDIA, showed a more pronounced sensitivity in its stock price compared to Samsung Electronics.
However, there were not many cases where the upward trend was maintained for five trading days. Comparing the closing prices just before the earnings announcement with those on the fifth trading day after the earnings were reflected, Samsung Electronics fell by 1.13% and SK Hynix rose by 0.96% after the August announcement last year. In November last year, Samsung Electronics rose by 6.53%, but SK Hynix fell by 6.76%. After the earnings announcement in February this year, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix fell by 5.85% and 7.56%, respectively, over five trading days.
In contrast, in May, Samsung Electronics rose by 8.51% and SK Hynix surged by 31.17%. This indicates that even if semiconductor stocks rise on the day of the earnings announcement, they may give back their gains depending on subsequent factors such as interest rates, geopolitical situations, and supply-demand dynamics among domestic investors.
On this day, driven by the positive momentum from NVIDIA, the stock prices of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the top two companies by market capitalization, rose, leading the KOSPI to an upward trend. As of 9:06 a.m. on this day, the KOSPI was up 2.59% from the previous trading day at 6,984.78. Foreign investors were net buyers of 87.6 billion won, while institutions and individuals were net sellers of 40.4 billion won and 69.2 billion won, respectively.
