A Twin Falls police officer shot and wounded a dog that ran toward them while officers were attempting to contact a resident Wednesday afternoon, according to the Twin Falls Police Department.
The department said two of its officers were at a residence near Diamond Avenue and Lois Street at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, to speak with a resident as part of what police described as an active investigation.
Police said one officer knocked on the front door and then stepped several feet to the side in the front yard. A large Rottweiler “ran from the side of the house” toward the officer. As the dog approached, the officer fired their gun, hitting the animal.
Animal Control transported the dog to a local veterinary clinic for evaluation and treatment, according to the police department. Twin Falls Police said that the dog has been treated and released to the owner as of 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The Twin Falls Police Department said the incident has been referred to the Twin Falls County Sheriff's Office for an independent investigation, consistent with department practice in officer-involved incidents.
Police said additional information will be released when appropriate, while protecting the integrity of the active investigation and the privacy of those involved.
