Last month, the number of domestic business employees increased by 220,000 people compared to the same month a year ago, but approximately 65% of the increase consisted of temporary and daily workers. The trend of employment growth concentrating in temporary and daily positions has continued.
According to the "Business Employment and Labor Survey" released by the Ministry of Employment and Labor on the 27th, as of the end of last month, the number of domestic business employees was 20.718 million people, a 1.1% (226,000 people) increase compared to the same month the previous year. Regular workers (full-time) increased by 0.5% (78,000 people), while temporary and daily workers rose by 7.6% (147,000 people).
By industry, the number of workers in the health and social welfare services sector increased by 119,000 people (4.6%) compared to a year ago, leading the overall growth. In contrast, wholesale and retail trade decreased by 28,000 people (-1.2%), arts, sports, and leisure-related services fell by 9,000 people (-2.7%), and information and communication industries declined by 2,000 people (-0.3%).
Manufacturing, the industry with the largest share of workers, increased by 14,000 people (0.4%) compared to the same month the previous year. The growth in manufacturing workers has gradually expanded, from 3,000 people in April, 7,000 people in May, 12,000 people in June, to 14,000 people last month. The number of construction workers also rose by 3,000 people (0.2%), marking two consecutive months of growth.
By business size, the number of workers in businesses with fewer than 300 employees increased by 164,000 people compared to a year ago, while those in businesses with 300 or more employees rose by 62,000 people.
Last month, the number of new hires who started work was 1.143 million people, an increase of 177,000 people compared to the same month the previous year. The number of job leavers or those who changed jobs was 1.127 million people, up by 178,000 people (18.8%). Among the 1.029 million newly hired workers, temporary and daily workers accounted for 672,000 people, representing the majority of the hiring increase.
Real wages, adjusted for inflation, have decreased for three consecutive months. In June, the average monthly wage per worker was 4.094 million Korean won, a 3.1% increase compared to the same month the previous year. However, as consumer prices rose by 3.2% during the same period, real wages actually decreased by 0.1%. Real wages have been declining for three months, following decreases in April and May.
Wage disparities based on employment type and company size remained significant. The average monthly wage for regular workers was 4.375 million Korean won, approximately 2.5 times that of temporary and daily workers (1.773 million Korean won). Workers in businesses with fewer than 300 employees earned an average of 3.698 million Korean won monthly, while those in businesses with 300 or more employees received 5.933 million Korean won, resulting in a difference of approximately 2.235 million Korean won.
