President Lee Jae Myung said on the 27th regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s hope for dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, “As a pacemaker, we will support the resumption of North Korea-U.S. talks.”
The president made the remarks in a written congratulatory address read by Lim Ung-soon, Second Deputy Director of the Office of National Security, at the International Korea Forum (GKF) held at the Westin Josun Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul, on the same day. He stated, “Through dialogue and cooperation based on mutual respect, we must create a Korean Peninsula where there is no need to fight as soon as possible.”
President Lee added, “Despite our government’s efforts to ease military tensions and resume dialogue, North Korea continues to adhere to a hostile stance. However, this cannot be a reason to stop our efforts toward peace on the Korean Peninsula.” He continued, “Fortunately, signs of change are emerging on the Korean Peninsula. President Trump has expressed his will to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.”
President Lee further stated, “The Republic of Korea, as a party to peace on the Korean Peninsula and a pacemaker, will unwaveringly strive to support trust-building and dialogue resumption between North Korea and the U.S., and to realize a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula. In the process, we will listen to the voices of countries around the world and expand the scope of international cooperation.”
Unification Minister Chung Dong-young said in his opening address at the forum regarding the U.S. President’s decision to scale down the South Korea-U.S. joint exercise ‘Ulchi Freedom Shield’ (UFS), “A window of opportunity, not a crisis, is opening. We must seize this golden opportunity for peace.”
Minister Chung emphasized, “First and foremost, we must achieve North Korea-U.S. dialogue through our role as a pacemaker. Instead of passively waiting to see the U.S.’s moves, we must proactively create space by taking the initiative.” He added, “We must focus all our capabilities to ensure that North Korea-U.S. dialogue leads to four-party talks between the South, North, the U.S., and China. Transitioning the unstable armistice regime to a peace regime through four-party dialogue is the fundamental solution to the Korean Peninsula issue.”
