Officer cleared in fatal shooting of IU Kokomo student

Legal Justification for Shooting

Prosecutors have concluded that a Kokomo police officer was legally justified in a shooting that resulted in the death of a college student in August. Howard County Prosecutor Mark McCann announced on Thursday, October 23, that his office had completed its review of the incident involving the shooting of 30-year-old Johnathan Shane Landis, a Marine veteran and honors student at Indiana University Kokomo. The shooting occurred on August 2, 2025, when officers responded to a report of gunfire and a distressed individual at a residence located in the 2100 block of South Lafountain Street.

According to the prosecutor's office, when officers arrived at the scene, they found Landis armed with a rifle outside an apartment complex. He had previously fired the rifle both inside and outside the apartment, as reported by investigators. Landis refused multiple commands to drop the rifle, handling it in an "erratic and threatening manner," which created a clear danger to Officer Daniel Hunkeler, his fellow officers, and nearby residents and students.

At this point, Hunkeler fired one shot, which struck Landis. Officers provided emergency aid, but Landis died at the scene.

"This incident represents an undeniable tragedy for everyone involved," McCann stated in a release. "The evidence clearly shows, however, that Officer Hunkeler acted in a manner that was lawful and necessary to protect himself, other responding officers, and community members in harm's way."

Details of the Incident

Indiana State Police conducted the investigation into the shooting. An internal review by the Kokomo Police Department is currently ongoing.

Landis' obituary highlights his background as a graduate of Wabash High School in 2014. After high school, he served with the U.S. Marines before returning to Indiana to pursue studies in physics and mathematics at IU Kokomo. During his time at the university, he made both the Dean's List and the Chancellor's List. His obituary also notes his love for mathematics, basketball, gaming, and his deep affection for his family.
