Bears Name Rival's Former Manager as Bench Coach

Doosan Bears Strengthen Coaching Staff with New Hires

The Doosan Bears, a prominent baseball club in South Korea, have made several strategic moves to bolster their coaching staff following a challenging season. Just four days after appointing a new manager, the team announced the addition of Hong Won-ki, a former manager of a rival team, to their coaching roster. This move marks a significant step in the team's efforts to rebuild and improve performance.

Hong Won-ki Joins as Bench Coach

Hong Won-ki, who is 52 years old, will serve as the bench coach for the Bears, working closely with the newly appointed manager, Kim Won-hyong. Hong previously managed the Kiwoom Heroes from 2021 until July of this year, when he was let go due to the team’s struggles in the league. The Heroes were in last place among the 10 teams in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO).

Hong and Kim have a history of competing against each other, most notably in the 2022 Korean Series, where Kim led the SSG Landers to victory. That series was Kim’s only title as a manager. Hong, on the other hand, played for the Bears from 1999 to 2005 and was part of the team that won the 2001 Korean Series title.

"I am overwhelmed to be putting on a Doosan Bears jersey for the first time in 20 years. This is where I enjoyed the best years of my playing career," Hong said. "Manager Kim and I went head-to-head in the 2022 Korean Series, and now we will begin a new chapter in our relationship. I will try to help him the best I can."

Overhauling the Coaching Staff

The Bears have made significant changes to their coaching staff after failing to make the postseason for the first time since 2022. This overhaul reflects the team’s commitment to improving its performance and regaining its competitive edge.

In addition to Hong’s appointment, the Bears have also signed Son Si-hyun, a former All-Star shortstop, as the quality control coach. Son, who is 45, spent the first nine years of his 15-year playing career with the Bears. Known for his exceptional fielding skills, he was a key player for the team.

Son has experience as both a coach and a minor league manager for two other KBO clubs, the NC Dinos and the SSG Landers. His return to the Bears comes with a sense of responsibility and excitement.

"I can't wait to see Bears fans again, but I also feel the weight of responsibility," Son said. "I will do everything I can to build strong defense and teamwork."

A New Era for the Doosan Bears

With these new additions to the coaching staff, the Doosan Bears are poised for a fresh start. The combination of experienced coaches and a renewed focus on team dynamics could lead to improved performance in the upcoming seasons. Fans are eager to see how these changes will impact the team’s success and whether they can reclaim their position as one of the top teams in the KBO.
