California Lawmakers Demand Answers After Live Fire Demonstration Shrapnel Hits Highway
Over two dozen California lawmakers have sent a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, requesting detailed information about a live fire demonstration that took place over Camp Pendleton. The event led to a misfire, resulting in shrapnel falling on a highway and raising concerns about safety protocols and coordination with local authorities.
The incident occurred during an event titled "America's Marines 250: From Sea to Shore - A Review of Amphibious Strength," which was held at the Marine base on Saturday. This celebration marked the 250th anniversary of the Marine Corps. Among the attendees were Vice President JD Vance, Hegseth, Navy Secretary John Phelan, and Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Eric Smith.
The event included a live-fire amphibious assault demonstration over Interstate 5. However, this demonstration resulted in shrapnel hitting at least two California Highway Patrol (CHP) vehicles. This has prompted questions regarding the preparation for the event and the level of coordination between the military and state and local officials.
"While we are relieved no one was injured, we are deeply concerned by the decision-making that led to this incident," the lawmakers, led by California Democratic Rep. Mike Levin, wrote in the letter. CHP Border Division Chief Tony Coronado, who is also a Marine, noted that "it is highly uncommon for any live-fire or explosive training activity to occur over an active freeway."
The lawmakers have asked the Defense Department and the Marines to clarify who made the decision to hold the demonstration over one of the state's busiest highways. They also requested information on whether any other damage was caused by the misfire and who would be responsible for covering the damages.
"The State of California prides itself on its strong relationship between Marines and neighboring communities," the lawmakers wrote. "Maintaining public safety has been a central pillar of that relationship, which is built on trust and confidence. Our Marines deserve to be celebrated without compromising these ideals."
The coalition of lawmakers, which includes 26 members and Democratic California Sens. Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla, has asked Hegseth to respond to the letter by October 29.
