NKY Shelter Readies for Winter Cold

CINCINNATI (WXIX) - The Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky recently held its second annual drop-off donation event, aiming to gather essential supplies in preparation for the upcoming winter season. This initiative is crucial as temperatures begin to drop, and the need for warmth and support increases for those experiencing homelessness.

Ruslyn Case-Compton, the office manager and acting director of the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky, shared her insights with FOX 19 about the importance of community involvement. She emphasized that during the winter months, individuals living on the streets face significant challenges, often without access to stable shelter or basic necessities.

“We’re inviting members of the community to drop off supplies that we can use to help people during winter shelter, which starts Nov. 1,” she said. “During the winter, people who are living on the streets and don’t have a stable place to live can really suffer.”

The shelter is currently collecting a variety of items, including clothing, food, toiletries, bedding, and towels. These supplies are essential for providing comfort and care to those in need. Case-Compton explained that any items not used by the shelter are donated to other local charities such as St. Vincent DePaul or the Salvation Army. If these organizations cannot utilize the items, they are sent overseas, ensuring that nothing goes to waste.

This approach reflects the shelter’s commitment to sustainability and maximizing the impact of every donation. “The idea is that nothing goes to waste,” she added.

Last year, the event saw around 40 cars participating in the drive-through donation process. This year, the numbers have already doubled, with 80 cars having passed through within just two hours of the event’s start. “It really feels great to see all the love in the community,” Case-Compton said, expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support.

She also mentioned that the community’s generosity should continue beyond the winter months. “Homelessness happens year-round, not just in the winter,” she said. “We believe that everyone deserves a place to sleep at night that is warm and safe, and we thank everyone for their concern and support.”

Despite the progress made, the shelter still has specific needs. They are particularly looking for men’s underwear, bedding, and any shoes or boots that can be provided. These items are vital for ensuring that individuals have the necessary resources to stay comfortable and protected during the colder months.

Case-Compton encouraged anyone who is able to contribute to reach out and offer their support. Whether through donations or spreading awareness, every effort helps make a difference in the lives of those in need.

As the winter approaches, the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky continues to rely on the kindness and generosity of the community to fulfill its mission of providing warmth, safety, and dignity to all.
