A Courageous Act in the Midst of Tragedy
In Oswego, Illinois, a tragic incident unfolded at a local Chick-fil-A restaurant, where a delivery driver was killed and a maintenance worker was wounded. The events took a dramatic turn when the 20-year-old maintenance worker, along with his mother, managed to subdue the suspect, showcasing remarkable bravery.
The Incident Unfolds
According to police reports, the attack began early Wednesday morning when 19-year-old Darryl Lee Jr. entered the Chick-fil-A through a back door. He attacked a delivery driver, identified as 52-year-old Tracey J. Land of Bridgeview, with a hammer and a knife. Land suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
After the murder, Lee reportedly remained inside the restaurant attempting to clean up the crime scene. Nearly two hours later, a 20-year-old maintenance worker and his mother were outside the restaurant, unaware that Lee was still inside and had just committed the murder.
At 4:56 a.m., Lee exited the restaurant and attacked the 20-year-old man from behind, stabbing him with a knife. Despite his injuries, the young man was able to subdue Lee with the help of his mother, who was on site working with him. The 20-year-old remains hospitalized in stable condition, according to police.
Police Acknowledge Heroism
The Oswego Police Department commended the courageous actions of the two workers, a son and a mother, which led to the capture of the offender. Their quick thinking and bravery played a crucial role in stopping the attacker before further harm could occur.
Police also mentioned that they had previously interacted with Lee during a "suspicious circumstances" call in September. At that time, Lee claimed he saw people in a vehicle with handguns, but officers were unable to confirm his account.
Charges and Investigation
Lee is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, concealment of a homicidal death, aggravated battery, armed robbery, armed violence, and burglary. He has been taken to the Kendall County Jail and remains in custody. Lee is scheduled to appear in court Friday.
Oswego police expressed gratitude to the multiple agencies that assisted in the investigation, including the Montgomery Police Department, Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, the Kendall County Major Crimes Task Force, the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the Kendall County Coroner’s Office.

Oswego Police Chief Jason Bastin described the incident as an unprovoked attack that resulted in a tragic loss of life. He extended his condolences to the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this incident.
