Nuclear Science Week in Oak Ridge: A Celebration of Innovation and Legacy
The American Museum of Science and Energy (AMSE) is set to host Nuclear Science Week in Oak Ridge from October 20 to 24, offering a unique opportunity to explore the region's deep connection to nuclear science. This week-long event will bring together students, educators, industry experts, civic leaders, and corporate partners to celebrate the legacy and ongoing leadership of Oak Ridge in the field of nuclear science.
Oak Ridge has been chosen as the host city for Nuclear Science Week 2025, an event that highlights the contributions of nuclear science to energy, medicine, national security, and technology. The selection underscores the city’s long-standing role in nuclear innovation, which began with the Manhattan Project and continues today through modern advancements.
“We are honored that Oak Ridge has been chosen as the national site for Nuclear Science Week this year,” said Alan Lowe, Executive Director of AMSE, in a statement. “This week brings together educators, industry leaders, students, and community members. It’s an exciting opportunity to build on the atomic history, showcase the region’s role in nuclear innovation, and to inspire the next generation of leaders in science and technology.”
During Nuclear Science Week, participants will have access to a variety of activities, including:
- STEM Education Opportunities: Workshops and sessions designed to engage students and educators in science, technology, engineering, and math.
- Workforce Development: Professional development programs aimed at preparing individuals for careers in nuclear science and related fields.
- Site Tours: Guided visits to historic and modern nuclear facilities, providing insight into the evolution of nuclear technology.
- Collaborative Programs: Interactive experiences that highlight the importance of nuclear science in today’s world.
The week will conclude with an all-age, family-friendly exposition at AMSE, featuring hands-on exhibits, guest speakers, and displays from regional partners in nuclear technology.
“East Tennessee is leading a new era of nuclear innovation,” said Tracy Boatner, president and CEO of the East Tennessee Economic Council. “In just the past few years, 10 companies have chosen the Oak Ridge Corridor for their new nuclear projects, and more announcements are imminent. Nuclear is powering Tennessee's future and reestablishing this region as a hub of innovation, workforce, and growth.”
Matt Mullins, AMSE marketing and communications director and NSW organizer, added, “Working with our many partners, including ETEC, has been integral to the planning of this eventful week. During this amazing week we will highlight both the history and the future of nuclear science in East Tennessee.”
