Fun Abounds: Fest 23 Kicks Off in Gainesville Through the Weekend

A Celebration of Punk Rock and Community

Gainesville, Florida, is set to welcome a vibrant celebration of punk rock this weekend with the annual "Fest 23" music festival. Taking place across 16 different venues throughout the city, the event will culminate at Bo Diddley Plaza, the largest venue for the gathering. This year’s festival promises to bring together fans from all over, creating an atmosphere of unity and shared passion.

Maria Chaos, an attendee who traveled from California, shared her enthusiasm for the event. “I think what it does is it brings everyone together in community, and that is what we need,” she said. Chaos, who recently founded her own music festival, expressed how much she enjoys experiences like these. “There’s a ton of people that I know performing, as well as making new friends, and just having new experiences with really wonderful, you know, bands, friends, and stuff.”

A Legacy That Started in 2002

The origins of Fest trace back to 2002 when founder Tony Weinbender, who moved to Gainesville from Virginia, wanted to create a space where his friends could come together. What began as a small gathering has since grown into a major event that draws thousands each year. Weinbender described how the festival has become a central part of his life. “It’s just become my life now. The biggest thing I get out of it is still seeing old friends that come from all over, and meeting new people.” He added, “It’s just heartwarming to know that people really, really come year after year after year and enjoy their time in Gainesville.”

A Unique Experience for Attendees

For many, the appeal of Fest lies in its authenticity. Travis Shoemake, an attendee from Oregon, returned for his second year in a row. “The fact that everybody’s in it together,” he said. “It’s not like overdone by corporate sponsorship, so the prices stay medium and everybody is in it to help each other, and we’re having a good time.”

This sense of camaraderie is evident among attendees, who often look out for one another during the event. While security measures are in place, including collaboration with the Gainesville Police Department and a fully-staffed team monitoring the perimeter, the festival's community-driven spirit plays a key role in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.

Free Programming and Ticket Information

For those who don’t have tickets, there will be free programming available outside The Bull each day. Additionally, tickets for individual shows are still on sale, offering opportunities for more people to join in the festivities.

Event organizers estimate that around 7,000 people will attend throughout the weekend, highlighting the growing popularity of the festival. Whether you're a longtime fan or a first-time attendee, Fest 23 promises to be an unforgettable celebration of music, community, and the enduring spirit of punk rock.
