Behind the Scenes of Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere

Fans are eagerly awaiting the release of the upcoming biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, which will feature Jeremy Allen White in the role of Bruce Springsteen. Before the film hits theaters, the rock legend himself shared his thoughts on the actor’s portrayal of him, offering a glimpse into the creative process behind the project.

At a screening of the film at the New York Film Festival on September 28, Springsteen, 76, expressed his gratitude to the cast and crew. He specifically praised White for his dedication and performance. “Jeremy Allen White for putting his whole heart and soul into the part, just such a wonderful job, and for playing a much better looking version of me,” he said. Springsteen added that he was “really thankful for that.”

The film explores the creation of Springsteen’s 1982 album Nebraska, a pivotal moment in his career when he was on the brink of global stardom. It delves into the struggles he faced as a young musician trying to balance the pressures of success with personal demons. The official synopsis describes the film as a journey through the emotional and artistic challenges that shaped one of Springsteen’s most iconic works.

During the same event, White, 34, spoke about his experience portraying the legendary singer. He revealed that he asked Springsteen directly, “Why this film? Why this period?” during his preparation for the role. White also shared how Springsteen opened up about specific moments during their road trip. “He was immediately so honest,” White said.

“He talked to me about a panic attack he'd had, and he described it to me as in this moment he felt like he was like a voyeur in his own life,” White explained. “He was an observer. He felt so outside of himself, and he told me that story, and that's a feeling I'm familiar with.”

White added that he often seeks presence in his own life and worked hard to find it every day. When Springsteen shared that story, he felt a connection that allowed him to explore the character more deeply. “I knew there was a tether that I could explore there,” he said.

Meanwhile, Springsteen has shared his perspective on watching White portray him on set. In a June interview with Rolling Stone, he mentioned that White was “very, very tolerant” of his presence during filming. “Jeremy Allen White was very, very tolerant of me the days that I would appear on the set,” he said.

Springsteen recalled telling White, “Look, anytime I’m in the way, just give me the look and I’m on my way home.” He noted that White was “wonderfully tolerant” of his presence and that the experience was enjoyable. However, he admitted that the film involved some of the most painful moments of his life.

“If there was a scene coming up that was sometimes really deeply personal, I wanted the actors to feel completely free, and I didn’t want to get in the way, and so I would just stay at home,” he said.

Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere is set to be released in theaters on October 24. Fans can expect a compelling look into the life of one of music’s most iconic figures, brought to life by White’s powerful performance.
