A Pattern of High-Profile Divorces
Nicole Kidman has a history of navigating high-profile, emotionally complex divorces. Her recent split from Keith Urban is not the first time she has faced such a challenging chapter in her life. More than two decades ago, she went through a similarly publicized divorce from Tom Cruise after an 11-year marriage and the shared parenting of two children.
Kidman and Cruise met on the set of “Days of Thunder” and quickly fell in love, marrying on Christmas Eve in 1990. Their relationship was marked by both intense passion and significant challenges. The couple adopted daughter Isabella in 1992 and son Connor in 1995, creating a family that many believed would last forever. However, their marriage ended in 2001, with Cruise filing for divorce and citing irreconcilable differences.
A Marriage That Was Hard to Let Go
In a 2012 interview with DuJour, Kidman reflected on her marriage to Cruise, admitting she had been "so impulsive and naive" when she married at 22. She described how deeply she loved Cruise, saying, "I would have gone to the ends of the earth for him." Despite this, the divorce came as a surprise even to her, and court documents obtained by ABC News at the time revealed that she had tried to save their marriage.
The documents stated that the couple had celebrated their 10th anniversary on December 24, and they were still intimate during that time. In fact, Kidman became pregnant but suffered a miscarriage. She protested Cruise’s decision to end their marriage, urging him to seek counseling or take other steps to address their problems. However, Cruise reportedly made it clear that his decision was final, and he left their home.
Career Success After the Divorce
Following the divorce, Kidman experienced a surge in career success. She landed a major role in the critically acclaimed film “Moulin Rouge!”, which solidified her status as one of Hollywood's most talented actresses. She later admitted that she threw herself into work after the emotional turmoil of the breakup.
At the 2015 Women in the World summit, she shared, "I wasn’t able to handle the reality of my life. And as an actor, you have this wonderful thing where you can go and get lost in somebody else’s life and become somebody else for a period of time."
Even five years after the divorce, Kidman still expressed her feelings for Cruise. In a 2006 interview with Ladies’ Home Journal, she said, "That was a major shock." She described Cruise as "huge; still is," and emphasized that to her, he was just "Tom." She added, "He was lovely to me. And I loved him. I still love him."
A Family That Felt Like a Loss
Kidman also spoke about the emotional impact of the divorce on her family. She said, "I think a divorce, and the demise of what your family is, is a little death in itself." This sentiment highlights the deep sense of loss she felt when their family structure dissolved.
Despite the pain, there seems to be no lingering animosity between Kidman and Cruise. In May, Cruise paid a rare compliment to his ex-wife while reflecting on their 1999 film “Eyes Wide Shut.” He said, "I suggested Nicole play the role [of Alice] because, obviously, she’s a great actress."
A Similar Situation with Keith Urban
Now, Kidman finds herself in a similar situation with Keith Urban. A source told Page Six that she tried to save their marriage, stating, "She did not want the separation and was trying to save things." However, relationships sometimes reach a point where they simply run their course.
Urban is reportedly already involved with another woman, according to TMZ. Recent court documents filed in Nashville, obtained by Page Six, show that Kidman has requested that she be the “primary residential parent” to her and Urban’s two daughters. This decision underscores the importance of ensuring the well-being of their children as they navigate this new chapter in their lives.
