A New Chapter in Philippine Cinema

TBA Studios, a prominent name in the Philippine film industry, has recently released the trailer for its upcoming historical biopic, Quezon. This film is set to debut in theaters across the Philippines on October 15. The movie stars Jericho Rosales, known for his role in Siargao, as Manuel L. Quezon, the second president of the Philippines. Quezon is part of TBA Studios' "Bayaniverse" trilogy, a series of films that explore significant moments in Philippine history.

The film features an impressive ensemble cast, including Iain Glen from Game of Thrones, Benjamin Alves from Widows’ War, Mon Confiado from Exchange, and singer-actress Karylle. These actors bring their unique talents to the screen, adding depth and authenticity to the story.

The "Bayaniverse" includes previous critically acclaimed films such as Heneral Luna (2015), which became the highest-grossing historical movie in the Philippines, and Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral (2018). Both were directed by Jerrold Tarog, who also took on the helm for Quezon. This continuation of the trilogy highlights the studio's dedication to showcasing the rich and complex history of the Philippines through cinema.

A Stand-Alone Film with Deep Roots

Daphne O. Chiu-Soon, President and COO of TBA Studios, emphasized that while Quezon serves as the conclusion to the trilogy, it is designed to be a stand-alone film. This means that audiences do not need prior knowledge of the previous films to fully appreciate Quezon. Following its premiere in the Philippines, the film will be released internationally at a later date, expanding its reach to a global audience.

The production of Quezon was supported by the Film Development Council of the Philippines and CreatePHFilms, highlighting the collaborative efforts between private and public sectors to promote Philippine cinema.

A Historical Drama with Political Intrigue

Quezon is a historical drama that focuses on the life of Manuel L. Quezon during the American occupation of the Philippines. The film explores his fight for Philippine independence and the political challenges he faces. As he navigates the complexities of power and politics, Quezon must outmaneuver his rivals, including Leonard Wood, Sergio Osmeña, and Joven Hernando.

In his relentless quest for power, Quezon eventually faces off against Emilio Aguinaldo in the 1935 Philippine presidential elections. He uses charm and favoritism as both weapons and currency in a campaign that reshapes the political landscape of the country.

Returning Cast Members and New Additions

Benjamin Alves and Mon Confiado reprise their roles as young Manuel L. Quezon and Emilio Aguinaldo, respectively, from the earlier films Heneral Luna and Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral. Scottish actor Iain Glen takes on the role of Leonard Wood, while Arron Villaflor plays Joven Hernando, and Cris Villanueva portrays the older Joven Hernando.

The ensemble cast also includes Romnick Sarmenta as Sergio Osmeña, Karylle as Aurora Quezon, JC Santos as Manuel Roxas, Jake Macapagal as Manuel Nieto, alongside Bodjie Pascua, Angeli Bayani, Jojit Lorenzo, Joross Gamboa, Therese Malvar, Ana Abad Santos, Ketchup Eusebio, and Nico Locco.

A Commitment to Philippine Cinema

Chiu-Soon expressed her excitement and pride in presenting Quezon to audiences both in the Philippines and internationally. She stated that this project is a testament to the studio’s commitment to bringing the best of Philippine cinema to movie theaters. With Quezon, TBA Studios aims to provide a compelling cinematic experience for all audiences, regardless of whether they have seen the previous films in the trilogy.
