A Collision of Faith and Fate
In the latest episode of Task, titled “Vagrants,” the tension between Robbie Prendergast (Tom Pelphrey) and FBI agent Tom Brandis (Mark Ruffalo) reaches a boiling point. As the path of escape for Robbie’s criminal activities begins to close in, the episode sets the stage for a dramatic confrontation with the Dark Hearts, a dangerous gang that has become a central force in his life.
Robbie is on edge, desperately searching for Cliff (Raúl Castillo) after a violent encounter with the Dark Hearts. His search leads him to Erin (Margarita Levieva), where he uncovers crucial information that points to Jayson (Sam Keeley) as the one responsible for Cliff’s disappearance and possible death. Determined to sell the stolen drugs, Robbie teams up with Shelley (Mickey Sumner) to find a buyer, but this decision puts him in even greater danger.
His next move is to meet with dealer Freddie Frias (Elvis Nolasco), hoping to strike a deal. However, when he returns home, he discovers that Maeve (Emilia Jones) has taken Sam (Ben Doherty) and turned him over to the FBI. Before this happens, however, the Dark Hearts’ leader Perry (Jamie McShane) visits the house, claiming he needs to retrieve some items from Maeve’s father.
As the pressure mounts, Robbie prepares to leave the house, only to be intercepted by Tom Brandis in the driveway. Brandis claims he is there to speak with Maeve about her father Billy’s cold case. He manages to get inside and speaks with Anthony Grasso (Fabien Frankel), an agent who is secretly working against the task force. Their conversation is interrupted when Tom receives a sketch that closely resembles Robbie as the suspect in Sam’s kidnapping.
In a shocking turn of events, Robbie pulls a gun on Tom and takes him hostage, forcing him into his car. The two drive down the highway, engaging in a deep and philosophical conversation about life after death and their views on the world. During this time, Robbie reveals everything he knows, including the fact that Jayson was responsible for the deaths of both Billy and Cliff, as well as his retaliation against houses for his brother's loss.
As they drive toward a lake, Robbie instructs Tom to ensure that Maeve isn’t held accountable for his actions before freeing the agent and continuing on his own path. When Tom contacts his team, they track the car using satellite radio. Unbeknownst to most of the agents, the Dark Hearts are also on the hunt for Robbie, setting the stage for a dramatic convergence.
As Tom calls out to Robbie from the edge of a river, the Dark Hearts close in, leaving viewers wondering what will happen next. According to Pelphrey, the dynamic between Robbie and Tom is a fascinating contrast. "It’s such a beautiful juxtaposition," he says. "One of the things I was struck by between Robbie and Tom is that here you have this ex-priest who’s grappling with loss of faith, what faith means, and his own understanding of God. On the other hand, you have Robbie who, in a strange way, lives in faith."
This theme is subtly reflected in the opening and closing moments of the episode, where Robbie takes water and rubs it on his chest—a ritual he and his brother practiced before swimming in the quarry during the winter months. While he claimed it was to prevent his heart from exploding, the action takes on deeper meaning as he prepares for whatever comes next.
Pelphrey explains that despite not believing in God, Robbie often speaks about things happening for a reason, which creates an interesting parallel between him and Tom. "I found that to be more of a subtle way that they’re kind of an interesting opposite side of the same coin," he says.
For director and executive producer Jeremiah Zagar, the scene in the car was particularly challenging. "A hard scene was the scene in the car with Robbie and Tom just because it was like 99 degrees and they didn’t have any air conditioning and they were sweating bullets and the equipment was bumping around," he recalls. Despite these difficulties, Zagar credits Pelphrey and Ruffalo for delivering powerful performances.
"That scene is the core of the show. I think that’s what you’re waiting for the entire season, in some ways, and that scene has to pay off in its utter simplicity," Zagar says. "It’s a testament to Mark and to Tom. They’re such incredible actors, and they lived in those characters’ skin for so long."
As Task continues on HBO, viewers are left eager to see what happens next for Tom and Robbie. The intense emotional depth of the episode leaves a lasting impression, making it one of the most compelling installments of the season.
