Elizabeth Olsen Returns as Scarlet Witch in "Marvel Zombies"
Elizabeth Olsen has made a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in a new way—through her voice. In the four-episode Disney+ animated series “Marvel Zombies,” she lends her voice to the beloved character of Scarlet Witch. The show is a spinoff of the popular “What If…?” series and explores an alternate universe where most of the population, including the Avengers, has turned into zombies. Alongside Olsen, the series features other familiar Marvel faces such as Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel, and Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, among others.
Olsen shared some interesting insights about her return during an appearance at L.A. Comic Con. When asked about her role in “Marvel Zombies,” she admitted that she had forgotten much of what happened in the series. “I truly recorded that years ago. I can't remember anything,” she said. “I need to watch it. I have no idea what [happens in] ‘Marvel Zombies.’”
She also reflected on how she recorded her lines. “It's my voice. I did it in my house, I wasn't even in an office space. This must have been 2020, 2021? Why was I working in my house and not in a studio? I really have no idea what it was like. I'm so sorry.”
Olsen first introduced the character of Scarlet Witch in the post-credits scene of 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” She then played a supporting role in 2015’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” Since then, she has appeared in major films such as “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” She also headlined the Disney+ series “WandaVision,” which earned her an Emmy nomination.
The “Doctor Strange” sequel marked Olsen’s last in-person appearance as Scarlet Witch in the MCU. The film transformed the character into a full-blown villain, ending with Scarlet Witch being crushed under a collapsed building. Her current fate remains uncertain, and neither Olsen nor Marvel have announced when the character will return. Additionally, she is not set to appear in next year’s “Avengers: Doomsday.”
Despite this, Olsen has expressed openness to reprising the role if there is a compelling way to bring Scarlet Witch back into the MCU. “It's a character that I love going back to when there's a way to use her well, and I think I have been lucky that when I started I was used well,” she said in a recent interview. “I think people didn't know what to do with me for a second there. … If there's a good way to use her I'm always happy to come back.”
“Marvel Zombies” is now available to stream on Disney+. The series offers fans a unique look at the MCU through an animated lens, exploring a world where the heroes are no longer the saviors but the threats. With Olsen’s return, even if just through her voice, fans are reminded of the lasting impact of Scarlet Witch and the potential for her to re-emerge in future stories.
Fans are eager to see how the character will be reintroduced and whether her story will continue in a meaningful way. As Olsen continues to express her interest in returning to the role, it leaves room for exciting possibilities in the ever-expanding Marvel universe.
