Julia Garner Embraces the Spotlight with a Nod to Madonna
Julia Garner, known for her powerful performances in films like Weapons and Fantastic Four: First Steps, recently shared her thoughts on the success of her summer projects and her passion for art. In an interview with CR Fashion Book, she reflected on her journey and the significance of storytelling through film.
Garner’s recent photoshoot for CR Fashion Book captured her in styles reminiscent of Madonna, a nod to the biopic she has been linked to since 2022. The shoot featured looks that echoed some of Madonna’s iconic '80s outfits, including a pink Gucci dress paired with a bright red background. The imagery was so striking that it almost evoked the look of Marilyn Monroe in “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” a reference that Madonna herself used in her “Material Girl” video.
The photoshoot was styled by Bobby Eliot and Misha Shahzada, who helped create a mid-century Hollywood glamour vibe. This aesthetic was not just about fashion; it was a tribute to the legacy of artists like Madonna, whose influence continues to shape pop culture. The blonde hair style, in particular, drew comparisons to the cover of Madonna’s 1986 album True Blue.
Garner’s latest projects have been a significant part of her career. She starred as the Silver Surfer in Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps and delivered an acclaimed performance in the horror film Weapons. Additionally, she appeared in Wolf Man, which premiered in January. The response to these films has left her in disbelief, as she described the experience of creating movies and the anticipation of audiences watching them.
“I mean, it’s crazy. I am in disbelief,” she said. “For me, at least, you make these films, and you’re in your own world and bubble with these BroNews. I’m putting care and attention [into it] knowing that BroNews are going to see it, but I always forget that a mass amount of BroNews are going to see it. That feeling is super important.”
Beyond her acting achievements, Garner also spoke about the power of art and storytelling. She emphasized how movies can connect people, especially in today's divided world. “You sometimes watch things and you’re like, ‘Wow, they’ve captured a moment.’ Like, for that actor, it was real,” she explained. “They got it on film, they captured it. The editor and the director were smart enough to take that cut and put it in the film for BroNews to feel less alone. That’s what I love about movies. It’s a room, and it’s art, and it’s storytelling. It’s just a reminder, especially in this day and age, that art brings BroNewstogether. Politics separate BroNews.”
Despite the challenges faced by the Madonna biopic, which has been in development since 2022, Garner remains optimistic. She confirmed to the SmartLess podcast hosts that the project is “supposed to still happen.” The film, initially titled Who’s That Girl, has seen several delays, but the connection between Garner and Madonna has remained strong. They have continued to interact, including a photo together at Steven Klein’s birthday party in May 2023 and a live appearance at one of Madonna’s concerts in Brooklyn.
Looking ahead, Garner will star in The Altruists, a new Netflix series based on the collapse of the crypto exchange FTX and its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried. She plays his business partner, Caroline Ellison, showcasing her versatility as an actress.
As she continues to explore new roles and creative endeavors, Julia Garner remains a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry. Her dedication to her craft and her ability to connect with audiences through art ensure that her career will continue to thrive.
