A New Chapter for the Prince and Princess of Wales
The Prince and Princess of Wales, along with their three children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—have officially moved into their new home, Forest Lodge, a historic eight-bedroom mansion located in Windsor Great Park. This relocation marks a significant shift in the family’s life, as they settle into what is being described as their “forever home.” The move took place during the children’s half term break, which ended recently, and was reportedly completed by November 5, 2025.
Forest Lodge, a Grade II-listed property, has undergone extensive restoration over the years. In 2001, £1.5 million ($2 million) was invested in preserving its original architectural features, such as the stonework, elaborate plaster cornices, marble fireplaces, Venetian windows, and a half-barrel vaulted hallway ceiling. Reports indicate that the future king has personally funded the property and any necessary renovations.
Planning and Renovations
Recent planning applications submitted to the local council outline proposals for minor external changes and internal alterations. The family of five, including their beloved dog Orla, previously resided in Adelaide Cottage within Windsor’s Home Park.
According to a royal correspondent, the decision to move to Forest Lodge reflects the family's desire for more space and a more private environment. The location also allows them to remain close to Windsor Castle for official duties while providing a quieter setting for the children to grow up in.
A Fresh Start Amid Challenges
The move comes at an important time for the family. The Princess of Wales continues her recovery from cancer, and this new chapter offers a fresh start for the entire family. However, the Prince will be away for the first week of their new life, as he embarks on a solo trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the annual Earthshot Prize Awards.
Interestingly, the new home brings the family closer to William’s uncle, Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, who still resides in Royal Lodge, just over a mile away. However, Andrew is expected to move to a new residence on the King’s private Sandringham estate in Norfolk in the New Year, following the removal of his titles due to the long-standing Epstein scandal.
Lifestyle Changes and Financial Details
In 2022, the Prince and Princess of Wales made the decision to leave London full-time, seeking a more tranquil life for their children as they grow and take on their royal responsibilities. Forest Lodge is owned by the Crown Estate, meaning the royal couple will need to pay rent. It is believed that they will pay the market rate for the property.
After its 2001 restoration, the house was rented out for £15,000 ($20,000) per month. Over the past 24 years, its value is estimated to have increased significantly, with current estimates placing it around £16 million ($20 million).
Security and Community Impact
An exclusion zone was established around Forest Lodge in September ahead of the family’s move, causing frustration among nearby residents. The closure of Cranbourne Gate and the car park left those living within half a mile without access to the area. Previously, residents could obtain keys to the gate for a fee of £110 per year.
It is important to note that trespassing on a protected site under the Serious Organized Crime and Police Act (SOCPA) 2005 is a criminal offense. This underscores the heightened security surrounding the royal family’s new home.
