The Future of Star Trek: A New Chapter for the Next Generation
Star Trek has continued to evolve in the modern streaming era, with new series and content constantly emerging. However, there hasn’t been a feature film in nearly a decade, despite years of development announcements that have gone nowhere. Recent reports suggested that Paramount was considering at least one more film featuring the Kelvin timeline crew, which includes Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock. But with these characters now being portrayed by different actors on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, it raises the question—does another version of the same crew still make sense?
The new head of Paramount has stated that a Star Trek feature film is a high priority. One logical solution could be to transition the Kelvin timeline into the era of Star Trek: The Next Generation. This would mean recasting iconic roles like Captain Picard, Data, Worf, and others from the Enterprise-D crew. From a business standpoint, The Next Generation has characters that are just as recognizable to general audiences as Kirk and Spock.
While a 14th Star Trek movie with a completely new crew might be ideal, it’s unlikely to happen as a major studio release due to the risks involved. Instead, such a project might be better suited for a streaming platform. Recasting well-known characters would generate media attention, which could translate into ticket sales. Plus, if they wanted to connect it to previous films, they could include Zachary Quinto’s Spock, given the long lifespan of Vulcans.
Casting Ideas for a Next Generation Reboot
Tom Hardy as Captain Jean-Luc Picard
Tom Hardy played a younger clone of Picard, Shinzon, in Star Trek: Nemesis. Although the film wasn’t successful, fans praised his performance. Now that he's a major star, it could be time for some Trek redemption. Hardy could play an alternate timeline version of Picard, especially since he's around the same age as Patrick Stewart was when he first took the role.
Richard Madden as Commander William Riker
Madden carries the same energy as Jonathan Frakes did in the early seasons of The Next Generation. He has the leadership qualities needed for the role. Just don’t start Riker without his beard—he looks great with the fuzz.
Tilda Swinton as Lt. Commander Data
In an alternate timeline, why not cast Tilda Swinton as the android Data? Her otherworldly presence would bring a fresh take to the character. She could easily step into Brent Spiner’s iconic role while adding her own unique flair.
Caleb McLaughlin as Lt. Geordi La Forge
McLaughlin, known for his role in Stranger Things, could bring both charm and brilliance to the role of Geordi. He can handle the awkwardness and the technical expertise required for the position.
Marie Avgeropoulos as Counselor Deanna Troi
Avgeropoulos, from The 100, could bring Greek roots back to the character. Deanna is essential to the Next Generation crew, and Avgeropoulos would be a perfect fit for the role.
Jessica Chastain as Dr. Beverly Crusher
Chastain has the presence and charisma to play the Enterprise’s Chief Medical Officer. Her portrayal of Beverly Crusher could bring a new level of depth to the character.
John Boyega as Lt. Worf
Boyega could bring a new energy to the role of Worf. His performance in Attack the Block shows he can handle tough roles, and he’d be a great fit for the sullen Klingon officer.
Julia Garner as Lt. Tasha Yar
Garner has the right mix of hard edge and heart for the role of Tasha Yar. She could give the character a more compelling arc than in the original series.
Lupita Nyong’o as Guinan
Nyong’o, known for her role as Maz Kanata in Star Wars, could bring a similar wisdom and style to the role of Guinan. She could also make those iconic hats look stylish.
Jacob Tremblay as Ensign Wesley Crusher
Tremblay, who plays the young doctor in Doctor Sleep, could bring the same youthful energy to the role of Wesley. His ability to read younger makes him a perfect choice for the role.
A reboot of Star Trek: The Next Generation could be a bold move, but it could also bring fresh energy to the franchise. With the right casting choices, it could attract both longtime fans and new audiences alike.
