A Community Gathering for Warmth and Fellowship
In the heart of Columbia, South Carolina, the Washington Street Methodist Church opened its doors on Monday to offer more than just a meal. It provided warmth, conversation, and comfort to those in need, creating a space where people could come together and feel supported.
Traditionally known for distributing bagged lunches, the church took a different approach this time by hosting a sit-down lunch for anyone who needed a hot meal and a moment of fellowship. Volunteers served plates filled with barbecue chicken, macaroni and cheese, green beans, and dessert to dozens of guests, making the event a true community effort.
“We’re trying to provide a good and hot meal for everybody,” said Charles Joie, who was actively involved in the kitchen as it buzzed with activity. The event was not just about food; it was about bringing people together and offering a sense of belonging.
This initiative came at a time when many in the community are facing uncertainty. Federal employees affected by the recent government shutdown, along with families relying on SNAP benefits amid rising food costs, have found themselves in difficult situations. The church’s efforts aim to provide relief during these challenging times.
Terrence Chisolm, another volunteer, shared that preparations began early in the morning. “Started probably about 7:30,” he said. “It took about four, five, maybe six hours to get everything ready to serve.” The dedication of the volunteers was evident in the well-organized event and the quality of the meals provided.
Church leaders noted an increase in the number of people seeking assistance. Jacob Valdez, from Washington Street Methodist Church, emphasized that the event was open to all. “With the recent government shutdown, all are welcome,” he said. “We just want to make sure everybody goes home with full bellies and a smile.”
Beyond the meal, the church also offered toiletries and other essentials for guests to take with them. “They want them to come in and sit down for a change,” Chisolm added. “Just to get out of the weather and enjoy a warm space.” This thoughtful gesture ensures that those in need leave not only with a full stomach but also with practical items they can use.
Joie highlighted that the event was about more than just food. “Fun, fun, fun — that’s what it’s all about,” he said. “We enjoy being together. We enjoy doing this kind of thing.” For Joie, who has helped with the event three times, it’s always a rewarding experience. “It’s fantastic,” he said. “It’s always been an amazing, amazing time.”
The church plans to continue offering support to the community, reminding everyone that in times of need, a warm meal and a kind word can go a long way. By providing a space for connection and care, the Washington Street Methodist Church is making a meaningful impact on the lives of those around them.
