The season introduces Vecna, the biggest villain of the installment. He preys on children with unresolved trauma, haunting them with terrifying nightmares and hallucinations of the Upside Down. His victims include Chrissy Cunningham and Fred the journalist, and he eventually targets Max. The plot reveals that the only way to save a victim is by reminding them of happier times through music. Max manages to save herself just in time.
The Journey of Eleven and Joyce
In California, Eleven gets arrested but eventually regains her telepathic powers with the help of Doctor Brenner. Joyce successfully rescues Hopper with the assistance of Murray. By the end of the season, Vecna takes both Eleven and Max into his mind, where he kills Max while Eleven watches helplessly.
