Luke Grimes Returns to the Yellowstone Universe in New Spinoff
Luke Grimes has officially returned to the Yellowstone universe, starring in the first complete trailer for the franchise's latest spinoff, Y: Marshals. The 41-year-old actor reprises his role as Kayce Dutton, a central character in the original series. The upcoming show is set to premiere in March 2026 and features a compelling mix of action, drama, and the iconic Montana setting.
The trailer, released on social media platforms, highlights the rugged landscapes of Montana and introduces a lineup of familiar faces that fans of the original Yellowstone will recognize. Among them are key figures from the main series, reinforcing the connection between the new spinoff and its predecessor.
A New Chapter for U.S. Marshals in Montana
Y: Marshals follows an elite team of U.S. Marshals operating in Montana, facing a variety of challenges, including criminal organizations, drug syndicates, and even dangerous wildlife like grizzly bears. The show promises to deliver high-stakes action and intense storytelling, with Kayce Dutton taking on a leadership role in this new chapter.
Several Yellowstone veterans make appearances in the trailer, signaling that the new series will maintain strong ties to its roots. Notably, Gil Birmingham returns as Thomas Rainwater, chief of the Broken Rock Reservation. In the preview, he tells Kayce that all Duttons are natural-born killers, but notes that Kayce is different—he’s a protector.
Another notable return is Brecken Merrill, who now plays Kayce’s son Tate Dutton. At 17 years old, he appears more mature than in his final scenes on Yellowstone. Additionally, Deadline confirmed that Mo Brings Plenty will reprise his role as Mo, though Kayce’s wife, Monica Dutton (played by Kelsey Asbille), is not featured in the trailer. Her involvement in the series remains unclear at this time.
New Cast Members Join the Team
The cast of Y: Marshals expands with several new actors joining the fold. Ash Santos, known for her work on American Horror Story, will play Andrea, one of Kayce’s fellow marshals. Tatanka Means, who appeared in Killers of the Flower Moon, takes on the role of Miles, while Arielle Kebbel, from The Vampire Diaries, portrays Belle. Brett Cullen, recognized for his role as Thomas Wayne in Joker, will have a recurring part as Harry Gifford, the chief of the Montana branch of the U.S. Marshals.
Logan Marshall-Green also joins the cast as Pete Calvin, Kayce’s former military buddy. According to the official synopsis, Kayce will attempt to bring “range justice” to Montana, where he and his team must balance family, duty, and the psychological toll of serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.
The Legacy of Yellowstone
Luke Grimes played Kayce Dutton throughout the five seasons of Yellowstone, making him a central figure in the Dutton family. The original series experienced major changes when Kevin Costner left after completing only the first half of season five. His departure led to the elimination of John Dutton through a murder-for-hire plot.
While there was speculation about tension between Kevin Costner and Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, it was later revealed that Kevin left due to scheduling conflicts with his four-part Western film Horizon. He invested over $38 million of his own money into the project, which faced a disappointing box office performance.
When Yellowstone aired the final episodes of season five in 2024, Luke Grimes spoke about Kevin’s departure during an interview with Men’s Health. He said, “Hopefully everyone can see that it was time.” He also mentioned that Kevin’s absence removed some of the conflict from the show, calling it “the easiest season we’ve filmed.”
Grimes also shared that he hasn’t spoken to Kevin since the actor left the show, adding, “I do have his phone number – I just don’t feel like it’s my place to reach out. He can reach out to me if he wants.”
In a video obtained by the Daily Mail, Kevin Costner declined to comment on any alleged tensions with Luke Grimes, though he confirmed they haven’t spoken since the finale was broadcast.
