Belt Decor Hacks for Creative Accessories

Exploring the Art of Belt Decor

One of my recent focuses has been on the idea that fashion doesn’t always require a new outfit. Sometimes, it’s about reimagining what you already have. I’ve had a lot of fun experimenting with belt decor, and I believe it’s a great way to add personality and creativity to your wardrobe.

The quote of the day is: “Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” Michael Jordan. This resonates with me because it reflects the mindset of taking initiative and making something happen—whether it’s in life or in fashion.

This specific article came about when Mireille joined me in recreating outfits from street style looks that I had saved but hadn’t yet tried for my New 60 Outfits project. If you’re interested in seeing how she styled these looks, you can check out her site for fabulous ideas.

Most of my inspiration photos were winter-based, but the one above made me think about how we could have fun showcasing ideas for belt decor all year round. Belts are often seen as purely functional—holding up pants, cinching dresses, and creating shape. But they don’t have to stop there. What if we decorated them?

As I keep saying, we don’t need to copy an inspirational idea. The goal is to take the concept and use what you have to create something original and fun.

Why I Love Belt Decor

One of the reasons I enjoy styling accessories in unusual ways is that it instantly adds personality. Anyone can wear a black belt, but adding something unexpected makes it stand out. It’s also a great way to:

  • Use accessories creatively
  • Add interest without layering more clothing (especially useful in summer)
  • Change the vibe of an outfit

It feels playful, and at this stage in life, I believe fashion should have moments of fun and creativity.

Belts are an underrated detail, and I’ve discussed them many times. If you need more inspiration, check out some of my other articles:

Experimenting With Belt Decor

This isn’t my first time playing with belt decor. Here are some of my favorite experiments:

  1. Brooches on an Elastic Belt
I pinned brooches all over a wide elastic belt. The sparkle and dimension turned it into a statement piece. What I loved most was the contrast and bling. The two matching leaf blings are actually earrings, so don’t limit yourself to just brooches.

  2. Necklaces and Earrings Added to a Belt
I attached jewelry directly to an elastic belt by wrapping a necklace around it and holding the chain in place with some earrings. They mirrored the silver buckle with more architectural embellishments.

My New Belt Decor Experiments

So I wanted to come up with some newer ideas for this post. The possibilities are endless as long as you use your imagination and play with what you have in your closet.

  1. Trinkets Attached to an Obi Belt
For one outfit, I clipped little trinkets onto an obi belt. These trinkets are hanging with my brooches and have lobster clasps. Sometimes I add them to necklaces or anything where they can hang beautifully.

  2. Adding an Earring to a Leather Belt
This idea came from noticing the existing holes in a leather belt. I have these earrings that are too heavy for my ears, so I have them hanging with my brooches. I love this idea, but the exact example didn’t work perfectly. I was worried the earring might come off. Maybe if there were more overlap on the belt or if I used a hole on the side instead of the front buckle area.

  3. Wrapping a Fabric Bracelet Through the Buckle Area
This idea is actually two in one. I used one of my lobster clasp trinkets, but then thought the belt needed more. I threaded a fabric bracelet through the buckle area of the belt, and it completely transformed the look. The softness of the fabric against the structured belt created a wonderful style dichotomy.

  4. Adding a Necklace to a Chain Belt
I even made a Facebook video about this idea if you like tutorials. All I did was take a pearl necklace and weave it through the chain belt for added belt decor.

Why These Little Details Matter

Details like this are what truly make style personal. You’re not copying trends, but combining things you already own into something different and unique. Sometimes the outfits that get the most compliments are the ones where you experimented rather than followed the rules.

It makes sense because that’s when you stand out, not looking like everyone else.

The Fun of Styling Outside the "Rules"

What I love most about belt decor is that there really aren’t any rules. You can get a ton of ideas from my photos and Mireille’s post. So go have fun and create your own belt decor.

Isn’t that the fun of style as we get older? We stop worrying so much about whether something is “supposed” to be worn a certain way and start asking whether it brings us joy.
