People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok declared on the 26th that he will usher in the **‘Member Sovereignty 2.0 Era’** to strengthen party member sovereignty. He added, “Based on the united party spirit, we will advance into the **‘sea of public sentiment.’**”
Jang held a press conference at the People Power Party’s central headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, on the morning of the same day to mark his first anniversary as party leader. He stated, “We will leap forward as a people’s livelihood party, grounded in a member-centric political organization.” This came as Jang, elected party leader at the August 2025 national convention, outlined his operational direction for the remainder of his term.
Jang said, “In the remaining year of my term, we will start anew. We will reform from within and drive complete change.” He continued, “If the past year was about rebuilding a fractured party and uniting dispersed conservatives, the coming period will be about laying the groundwork for victory.”
Jang proposed the **‘Member Sovereignty 2.0 Era’**, stating, “We will establish a vibrant system that enables the party to fight effectively. Based on this system, we will fill the party with capable individuals who can lead the charge.”
Specifically, he pledged to introduce direct elections for provincial party chairpersons and local chapter leaders. He also mentioned plans to enhance members’ sense of ownership through mobile membership cards and a refined membership system.
He hinted at overhauling the party’s organizational management system. “We will upgrade the party’s organizational framework by improving audit evaluation metrics, systematizing member education, and revising party regulations to drive innovation,” Jang said.
Regarding the evaluation system for elected officials, he stated, “We will reform it to align with the conservative values of our time. A new evaluation system will be established for National Assembly members, regional leaders, local councilors, and others.” Jang previously formed a task force in July to develop evaluation criteria for incumbent lawmakers, governors, and local councilors.
Jang emphasized, “People Power Party 2.0 will differ from past reforms. We will build new values on our traditional foundation, enter the public sphere through member sovereignty, and find a new path for conservatism that resonates with public sentiment.”
On internal backlash against his push for direct elections for local chapter leaders, Jang said, “My conviction that this is necessary and essential remains unchanged. However, given concerns about timing and pace, I will listen to diverse opinions and seek a rational standard.” He avoided a direct answer when asked about his intention to seek re-election.
Attendees at Jang’s first-anniversary press conference included Supreme Council members Kim Min-su, Yang Hyang-ja, Kim Min-su, and Cho Kwang-han; Policy Committee Chairperson Lim Lee-ja; Secretary-General Jeong Hee-yong; Chief Spokespersons Park Sung-hoon, Park Choong-kwon, and Choi Bo-yun; Chief of Staff to the Leader Park Joon-tae; Special Strategy Advisor Kim Dae-sik; and Public Relations Director Seo Ji-young.
