U.S. President Donald Trump stated on the 26th during a phone interview with the conservative-leaning radio program ‘The Glenn Beck Program’ regarding the tariff war with Canada, “It’s time to teach Canada that they can no longer act this way,” adding, “We are losing more than 60 billion dollars annually in trade with Canada, approximately 84 trillion Korean won, and even greater losses.” This came as the Canadian government announced the day before that it would impose retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products, targeting key battlegrounds for the November midterm elections, and made clear it would not back down. Trump also remarked that renaming Lake Ontario, which serves as the border between the two countries, to “Lake America” “might not be a joke.”
On the same day, the official White House X (formerly Twitter) account posted a photo of the bald eagle, the U.S. national bird, subduing a so-called ‘Canada Goose’ (Canada Goose) on ice. The White House had stated in a press release the day prior, “Trump is ending Canada’s free ride” and “The U.S. economy is 13 times larger than Canada’s, and the U.S. population is eight times greater,” clearly signaling its resolve not to retreat in the tariff war. This photo also appeared during the men’s ice hockey final at this year’s February Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Olympics, when the U.S. national team defeated Canada and reclaimed the title after 46 years. Trump even invoked former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s comment from a year ago that “they cannot win against us,” mocking Canada’s defeat.
Peter Navarro, White House trade and manufacturing advisor and Trump’s trade advisor, mentioned Governor Mark Carney’s come-from-behind victory in last April’s election amid conflicts with Trump, stating, “Every time Carney criticizes Trump, Canadian citizens reward him” and “The problem lies with Canada, and there will never be a good outcome.” MAGA (Make America Great Again) camp figures view Carney as clashing with the Trump administration to strengthen his domestic political position. Amid the rapid deterioration of relations with the U.S., Carney is scheduled to attend a speech before members of the European Parliament on September 17 and also attend European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s State of the Union address, Politico reported on the 26th. Carney is also expanding his influence to countries like China.
Meanwhile, regarding John Ratcliffe, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA),’s secret visit to Moscow, Russia, Trump said, “There could be some results,” and “We hope the Ukraine war will end. We are working very hard to end the war.” On the situation in Iran, he reiterated his existing claims, stating, “Military and economic pressure are taking effect, so we will achieve a major victory very soon,” and “Since the Strait of Hormuz is open, the war will end quite quickly.” Regarding Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, he said, “His entire left side, arms, and legs are very seriously injured, but I do not think he is dead.”
