A Journey of Resilience and Music
Revel Day has made a name for himself as a backup singer for renowned artists such as Stevie Wonder, Andy Grammer, and Kirk Franklin. However, his recent appearance on The Voice showcased not just his musical talent but also his deeply personal story.
On the show, Day managed to turn the chairs of three coaches—Michael Bublé, Niall Horan, and Reba McEntire—during his performance of Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know." His rendition was more than just a song; it was a heartfelt tribute to his home and community. While Snoop Dogg admired his performance, he did not turn his chair, citing that Day would fit better with another coach.
Day shared a powerful message about the impact of the Eaton Fire, which began in January and became one of the deadliest wildfires in California history. The fire claimed 19 lives and destroyed over 9,400 structures. For Day, the experience was deeply personal. He explained that his home in Altadena, a neighborhood in Los Angeles County, was among those affected.
"I'm carrying Altadena with me in this moment," he said during the pre-performance segment. "So many people there lost so much. To represent what our story is on this stage, it's an opportunity of a lifetime."
When the fire broke out, Day and his wife were forced to leave their home. They initially planned to return the next day, but eight months later, they still cannot go back. Their house remains unsafe due to severe damage from asbestos, lead, and smoke.
"The fire came down our street. Two or three houses burned to the ground," Day explained. "Our house is still standing, but unfortunately, there is severe damage. We can't go back. It’s not safe. And I don’t know what’s gonna happen next, and I don’t know where we’re gonna go next. So, being in this process, I'm pinching myself a lot. I'm really grateful right now, for sure."
For Day, the song held special significance. "It talks about that place that's just for us," he said. "Being displaced from the Altadena fires was so hard. Our house is a family home. It's the house that I was born in. It's the city that raised me."
His performance captivated the judges. Michael Bublé praised his smooth and controlled voice, saying, "Well, you have really beautiful round, very smooth voice. When I heard that roundness and the control, I knew you had it in you."
Niall Horan shared a personal connection, referencing his own experience auditioning for the U.K. version of The X Factor. He noted that Day "got loose at some points" but emphasized how challenging it is to perform on a show like The Voice. "I've been there," Horan said. "Wow, I was terrible."
Snoop Dogg, while impressed, admitted that the decision wasn't easy. "The style of music you got, I was like, 'Damn, they already got me on that one.' To me, you would fit with one of them way better than me."
Ultimately, Day chose to join Niall Horan’s team. His journey on The Voice highlights not only his musical abilities but also his resilience in the face of adversity.
The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
