Actor Josh Hartnett Hospitalized After Collision in Newfoundland

Law enforcement authorities are currently investigating a recent collision involving actor Josh Hartnett, who was briefly hospitalized after an SUV he was riding in collided with a police vehicle in St. John’s, the capital of Newfoundland, Canada.

According to reports, a 59-year-old man was driving the sport utility vehicle when the crash occurred just before 1 a.m. on Thursday. Hartnett, who is 47 years old, was in Canada to film an untitled series for Netflix. The incident has prompted the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) to seek assistance from the public in their investigation.

A representative for the actor confirmed to PEOPLE that Hartnett has since been released and cleared to return to work. He is known for his roles in films such as Black Hawk Down, The Virgin Suicides, and last year's Trap.

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for Hartnett, the RNC, and Netflix for further comments on the incident. Meanwhile, Canadian authorities are urging anyone with information about the collision to come forward.

"RNC collision analysts are seeking any witnesses or video footage (CCTV, dash-camera, cell phone) from the area in the lead up to, or immediately following the collision," officials said in a statement. "Anyone with information is asked to contact the RNC at 709-729-8000."

Hartnett’s Career and Recent Projects

Hartnett, whose career spans over two decades, has appeared in a variety of projects, including Oppenheimer, Black Mirror, and The Bear in recent years. In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, he shared his thoughts on the diversity of roles he has taken on lately, which he described as exactly what he had always wanted.

"As an actor, I want to constantly switch the trajectory and mess with people's expectations," Hartnett said. "I wanted to do that the whole time from when I started 26 years ago. But at the time, the opportunity wasn't there for me to play all of these disparate characters within the studio system, nor was I probably good enough. I was so young."

He added, "As I've gotten older, people have seen that potential in me more, and now I'm able to do it in these other films and TV shows. Personally, I'm really just feeling super lucky to be working with the directors I'm working with because, really, actors are only as good as their directors. So to be able to work with directors who are at the top of their game right now, and being able to play these characters that are so disparate, is a dream come true for me, honestly."

Upcoming Netflix Series in Production

Netflix recently announced that its "Untitled Newfoundland Project," starring Hartnett, Mackenzie Davis, and Charlie Heaton, as well as Willow Kean, Ruby Stokes, Rohan Campbell, and Kaleb Horn, is in production and on location.

The plot centers around a "hard-bitten fisherman" who "discovers that his hometown is being terrorized by a mysterious creature." This new series marks another step in Hartnett’s evolving career, showcasing his continued interest in diverse and challenging roles.

Fans and industry observers are eagerly awaiting more details about the project, as well as updates on the ongoing investigation into the recent collision.
