Alan Cumming Reflects on His Journey with Nightcrawler in Avengers: Doomsday
Alan Cumming recently shared a heartfelt reflection on his experience portraying Nightcrawler in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday. The actor, known for his role as the host of The Traitors, described the process as "really healing" after what he called a "terrible experience" during his earlier portrayal of the character in 2003’s X2: X-Men United.
At the Televerse 2025 conference, Cumming revealed that he had just finished filming the highly anticipated movie, which is set to release in May 2026. He expressed his enthusiasm for the project, calling it "a great film" and sharing how the experience was vastly different from his previous time working on an X-Men film.
"I just came back. It was amazing. It was actually really… in a sort of ooey, gooey way, it was really healing and really nice to go back to something that was a terrible experience when I did it the first time," he said. "A great film, great film. I love the film."
Cumming has previously spoken about the challenges he faced while making X2: X-Men United. One of the main issues was the extensive time required to transform into the blue-skinned mutant, spending "like four and a half to five hours" in makeup each day. He also mentioned the difficulties with director Bryan Singer during that period.
However, this time around, Cumming felt much more positive about the experience. At 60 years old, he admitted that he didn’t expect to be doing stunts and playing a superhero in his 60s. "And everyone was really nice. And I got it done really quickly because of The Traitors, when most of my scenes were being shot. So I squashed them all together, and got a green screen and various things and little scenes of people here and there. But it was pretty stealthy."
While specific details about Avengers: Doomsday remain under wraps, Cumming hinted at an exciting possibility—his Nightcrawler may have a fight scene with Pedro Pascal’s Mister Fantastic. This revelation adds another layer of anticipation for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The cast of Avengers: Doomsday includes a star-studded lineup of actors. Among them are Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Letitia Wright as Black Panther, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Danny Ramirez as The Falcon, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Sebastian Stan as The Winter Soldier, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Lewis Pullman as Bob, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Vanessa Kirby as The Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing, and Joseph Quinn as The Human Torch, among many others.
Cumming’s return to the role of Nightcrawler highlights not only his dedication to his craft but also the evolving nature of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As the film approaches its release, fans are eager to see how the story will unfold and what surprises await in the next chapter of the Avengers saga.
