The Current Plans for DCU's Batman
James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken on the roles of co-CEOs for the DC Universe (DCU), and their vision is already taking shape. Superman has made its way to digital retailers after a successful theatrical run, and Peacemaker Season 2 will debut on August 21. However, details about Batman's appearances in the DCU remain under wraps, particularly for The Batman Part II and The Brave and the Bold.
The Batman Part II, directed by Matt Reeves, will feature Robert Pattinson as Batman, while The Brave and the Bold will introduce a new version of the character. Fan theories suggest that The Batman Part II might bring in Robin, potentially with him aiding Batman against the Court of Owls. Meanwhile, The Brave and the Bold will also have a version of Batman and Robin specific to the DCU. This could lead to confusion among general audiences, which is not what Gunn wants for the DCU.
There’s a potential solution if The Batman Part II introduces Damian Wayne. This would allow for a clear distinction between the two versions of Batman, making the DCU more coherent.
The Brave and the Bold Movie
The Brave and the Bold movie is based on Grant Morrison's comic book run, featuring Damian Wayne as Batman's actual son. This concept is inspired by the 2006 series Batman and Son, which introduced Damian Wayne to DC Comics as Robin. The film still has a long way to go before hitting theaters. Andy Muschietti, who is attached as director, has mentioned that the film has been delayed. This leaves room for fans to enjoy Pattinson's second outing as the superhero. The movie hasn’t even cast actors for Batman or Robin yet, and audiences may have to wait until next year or later to find out who will play these iconic characters.
Changing Plans Could Make Sense
The Batman Part II hasn't started filming yet, but fans have already begun theorizing about the sequel. One theory suggests that the Court of Owls would fit well into Matt Reeves' dark vision of Gotham. The Court of Owls consists of influential Gotham residents who use "Talons" to carry out assassinations. Another theory is that the film will introduce Robin, possibly through a meeting with Dick Grayson after his parents are murdered. This could align with the plot of Dark Victory, a sequel to The Long Halloween, which inspired The Batman.
However, introducing Damian Wayne in The Batman Part II could make more sense in the grand scheme of the DCU. If Pattinson becomes the DCU's Batman, it could open up opportunities for characters like Tom Rhys Harries' Clayface from his upcoming solo movie to appear in The Batman Part II. This would align with Gunn’s vision for the DCU, which he emphasized during his introduction video:
"DC has been disconnected in film and television for a long time, and it's one of our jobs ... to come in and make sure the DCU is connected in film, television, gaming, and animation. That the characters are consistent, played by the same actors, and it works within one story."
What We Do Know About 'The Batman Part II'
Robin, the Court of Owls, and other theories are all just speculation. James Gunn recently received the script and called it "great," but the film is still in the early stages of production. Filming won't start until spring 2026, so Matt Reeves and the producers are likely looking for talent to bring new characters to the film. The film is expected to release on October 1, 2027, which would be an ideal date for a spooky Batman story.
Robert Pattinson is set to return as Bruce Wayne and his alter ego. Andy Serkis will reprise his role as Alfred Pennyworth, and Jeffrey Wright will return as police commissioner James Gordon. Colin Farrell will don his prosthetics again to play Oz Cobb, following an exciting season of The Penguin. Unfortunately, very little has been confirmed about the film's cast and plot, leaving fans to continue speculating about the exciting sequel.
