Emerald Fennell Stands by Her Casting Choices for 'Wuthering Heights' Despite Criticism
Emerald Fennell, the acclaimed filmmaker and writer behind the upcoming film adaptation of "Wuthering Heights," has remained firm in her decision to cast Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi in leading roles, despite facing significant backlash from fans. The Oscar-winning director recently shared her thoughts on the casting choices during an appearance at the Brontë Women's Writing Festival, where she reflected on the weight of adapting Emily Brontë’s 1847 classic for modern audiences.
Fennell described the novel as deeply personal material that resonates with many readers, emphasizing the responsibility she felt in bringing the story to life. She spoke about her long-standing connection to the book, which began during her teenage years. According to Fennell, a particular edition of the novel played a key role in shaping her vision for the film, especially when it came to casting Elordi in the role of Heathcliff.
She revealed that she first considered Elordi for the part while working on the set of "Saltburn." At the time, she was struck by his resemblance to the illustration of Heathcliff featured in the first edition of the book she had read. Fennell told the audience at the festival that she believed Elordi possessed the right qualities for the role, calling him a “very surprising actor.”
However, the casting of Elordi sparked controversy among fans, who pointed out that Heathcliff is explicitly described as dark-skinned in the original novel. Many criticized the choice as a form of whitewashing, arguing that it misrepresented the character’s heritage. This reaction highlighted the ongoing debate around race and representation in adaptations of classic literature.
In addition to the controversy over Elordi’s casting, some fans expressed frustration over Margot Robbie’s selection as Catherine Earnshaw, the central love interest in the story. Robbie, who is 35 years old, was seen as too old for the role, given that the character is a teenager in the book. Fennell, however, stood by her decision, insisting that Robbie was the perfect fit for the role.
Fennell praised Robbie’s unique presence, describing her as “not like anyone [she’s] ever met.” She added that Robbie’s beauty and star power were essential to portraying the complex and rebellious nature of Cathy. In a lighthearted moment, Fennell joked that Robbie could “commit a killing spree and nobody would mind,” highlighting the magnetic quality she saw in the actress.
She went on to explain that Cathy is a character who pushes boundaries and challenges societal norms, and she believed that only someone with Robbie’s commanding presence could embody that spirit. Fennell emphasized that Robbie is not just an incredible actress but also someone with a “power, an otherworldly power, a Godlike power” that makes people lose their minds.
The film, "Wuthering Heights," is set to debut in theaters nationwide on February 13 and will be released internationally starting on February 11. As the release date approaches, Fennell’s bold casting choices continue to generate discussion, reflecting the ongoing conversations about how classic stories are reimagined for contemporary audiences.
